@susangunnartist I’m delighted to be showing new work in this exhibition alongside some great artists; opening next Saturday, all welcome hope you can make it…

The Space of Painting brings together the work of 9 painters practising across a range of idioms, all of whom engage with expanded conceptions of space beyond the formal or compositional constraints of painting itself.

Maurice Blanchot’s The Space of Literature (1955) reveals strange paradoxes in the act of writing and the creation of a literary work. In trying to make something other from language, its ‘work’ is that which stands apart and distinct from its material source and represents the effort of writing to separate from that which contains it.

This is also the task of painting, because painting is intrinsically an act which creates something other from the world, our perception and experience. The endeavour to create this something other is to go beyond perception into the space of painting, which the work in this exhibition exemplifies. In the realisation of their vision, these artists are engaged in a material discourse with indeterminacy.

‘If Heaven Falls’ opened the year by transforming G2 and expanding into three wall panels in Gallery G1- complete with a major overhaul that saw shelving removed to open up the gallery space. A huge opening reception spilled onto the terrace, memorable for its wonderfully large Irish contingent.

Curated by and featuring works by Alexandra Baraitser alongside Keith Ashcroft, Richard Baker, Jake Clark and Mandy Hudson, ‘The Chair’ was a thoughtful exploration of the show’s namesake in all its forms and meanings.

‘Two Singers, One Song’ saw Jackie Askew and Sheila Volmer – long‑time friends since their Central St Martins days in the 1980s – bring decades of artistic dialogue into a beautifully cohesive two‑person show.

Julia Warr introduced a vibrant new energy to the gallery with her colourful, pared back paintings ‘In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated’.

Our Lido Open 2024 winner, Jack Shearing, delivered a sensitive, beautifully drawn and acclaimed exhibition in ‘The Sunset Speaks Loudly of Days’ that more than lived up to the accolade.

Lesley Greening‑Lassoff, Kristen Healy, Sheila Rennick and Rhys Trussler came together for ‘Salted’, a show that *shouldn’t* have worked on paper – but absolutely did! The diverse styles of these artists offered a lively, challenging look at the seaside town and the British summer holiday.

The Lido Open 2025 was our biggest event of the year, with 102 artists selected by Sophie von Hellermann and Kristen Healy, and Laura L. Bell named as this year’s winner. A huge opening reception that captured the spirit of the Lido Stores’ community and celebrated contemporary art.

Louisa Longstaff‑Scales filled the gallery with quiet, delicate paintings in ‘Borrowed Light’ that rewarded slow looking and close attention.

And finally, the Winter Show. Our final exhibition of the year: 26 artists curated by Kristen Healy, marking five years of The Lido Stores with a celebratory, expansive group show. And cake. We’ll never forget the cake.

Here’s to everyone who visited, exhibited, supported, championed, challenged or bought from us over the last five years. Roll on 2026! 💙
