Lofi sound in a breakbeat context. I used a Recorderman mic technique + a kick out, so three microphones only. Very useful sound across genres. You can dial up or down the lofi aspect depending on the vibe you’re going for.

Here I’m using a synth loop from @timbofromkeno. If you don’t know of Tim, give him a follow because he’s ridiculously talented.

Huge shoutout to @blairsinta for the nudge to go outside of my comfort zone.

Here is my interpretation of “The Hand That Feeds” by NIN. Loads of fun with the straight heavy rock feel and added toms in the chorus. The way it’s played live is different than the studio version and I opted for the live version- more along the lines of Ilan Rubin and Josh Freese.

Also something to note is when NIN performs this song there are plenty of additional tracks to fill out the groove, sampled hi hats and whatnot, but here it’s stripped back so essentially just guitar, bass, vocals, synths, and drums. Gives it a little heavier feel to my ears.

I opted for my Thrust Drums black sparkle kit which felt really good to play. I’m going to use it on some dates later this year so good reason to stretch its legs a bit.

Taste by Sabrina Carpenter, light, fun, about as pop as you can get with a feel to match. Aaron Sterling playing drums on the recording delivers as always.

Train beats are a fav of mine. Fast or slow, swung or straight, the driving nature and consistent fabric of 16th notes provides a connection between the kick on 1, and backbeat on the snare. This mid-tempo country song by Sara Evans is a prime example of a bouncy train feel with a strong backbeat. The original was performed by Matt Chamberlain and he of course does Matt things and it feels great.

1 mic, 1 camera, 1 take. PLOSIVS - Hit The Breaks. Atom Willard puts the pedal down and drives this song while the rest of us chase that feel Atom so effortlessly delivers. Full version on YouTube 🤘

This song reminds me of charging down the freeway, windows down, belting out your latest playlist en route to a show. Summer is on its way, at least I think it is :)

Drums. Being able to record drums for artists is a joy. Having this space and the flexibility to dig way in is a privilege that is not lost on those of us who do this for even a portion of our living. It’s more than paying rent, it’s our small contribution to art, and to life.

This @parkermccollum song is a great example of how getting the right sounds adds to the feel and general landscape of a song. It can be argued that the groove is basic, but it’s not about the technicality of the pattern, it’s about how you play that groove that matters. Taking that a step further, it extends to: “How does it sound?”

Emulating “Funky Drummer” via @blairsinta. This is one ribbon microphone with some eq, compression, and plate reverb. Still wrapping my head around how Maestro Stubblefield played with his level of consistency and control for like 9 minutes. He was the Real Deal.

Really learning songs takes time. First it’s big picture/form, then it’s grooves/feel, and where to place things. Then it’s details, like what cymbals am I using, does the song need a push here or to sit back there, what about any fills? Sometimes it’s a quick process, other times not so much.

You ultimately know when that song is a part of you when you stop thinking your way through it and you become fully engaged, it’s almost like you’re a conductor and you’re just guiding your limbs.

This concept isn’t just for experienced musicians, it’s for everyone across the board. I just find it interesting how those of us who’ve been playing for a chunk of our lives can gloss over the foundational things that got us where we are today. And, most issues in our playing can be resolved with some sort of focus on the fundamentals.

The reality is the proverbial rubber meeting the road starts and continues with fundamentals. They’re not everything, but they are THE foundation.

You can, and always will, make legit, tangible progress by spending time on your instrument’s fundamentals. We can break this down even further but this is a general overview.
