As part of “What Seasons Is It, America?” I got to sit with artist, photographer, father John David Becker—who has been a real force behind my own artistic practice. (Thank you, JDB.)

We talked about freedom.

Here is a film about our conversation. I really do hope you can get to his happening this week at The Brooklyn Museum.

Families are coming to “What Season Is It, America?”—a happening at The Brooklyn Museum this weekend.

They walk a circle of 500 works of photography, poetry, and moments in American history.

Each family member picks something that intrigues them, or inspires them.

And then we take a seat at the center table in the room, and we talk.

Here is my own son, Miles Wages Yamashita Holcomb sharing some thoughts on America — and the America he hopes his generation makes.

Here is a film about our conversation. I really do hope you can get to his happening this week at The Brooklyn Museum.

I saw with Alexis Bittar, as part of “What Season Is It, America?”

He’s a designer. A documentarian. A passionate advocate for democracy, and democratic ideals.

And he talked about the America he yearns for.

We looked at poetry.
We looked at photography.
We looked at moments in history.

Here is a film about our conversation. I really do hope you can get to his happening this week at The Brooklyn Museum.

Every life has a season. What season are you in? This exhibition invites you to walk among photographs, poems, moments in our shared history. To then explore where you are in your life, truly. My dear friend Huma Mody shared where some photographs took her -- and stories tumbled out, none of which I'd heard in my 15 years of knowing her. Come share a story of your time on this earth. We each matter and our stories matter, too. What Seasons Is It, America?

This is a time to gather and be in community.
This is a time for asking questions and for letting yourself be still long enough to receive an answer.

My friend @keithyamashita is so generously holding space for us to do this @brooklynmuseum this week with @jmichele holding our experience with sound.

Take a poem or photograph.
Offer your reflections at the table.

This cycle of connection, of giving and receiving with generosity and gratitude, is what has sustained us for thousands of years and will continue to do so - as long we keep showing up for each other.

Thank you Keith, Joshua, Sue Fan and Tim for inspiring me to flip through an old notebook of mine to find the right words to describe the experience…(last photo). —> by @keithyamashita

I was introduced to @keithyamashita by my dear friend @rachelshechtman. What struck me most about Keith’s work was how physically resonant his poems felt to me. I felt like I already knew them.

Here is a film about our conversation. I really do hope you can get to his happening this week at The Brooklyn Museum.

“A life has seasons. So does a family. So does a friendship. Perhaps a country does too.”

With a snap, our Beaux-Arts Court has been transformed by artists Keith Yamashita (@keithyamashita) and Joshua-Michéle Ross (@jmichele), inviting you to consider your answer to the question, “What Season Is It, America?”

Walk around the 250-foot circle of Yamashita’s poems, photographs, and pieces of Americana, and choose works that speak to you. Then, if you’d like, join Yamashita at the table to share what you chose and listen to others’ choices.

Learn more about the performances, happening daily through October 25 from 11 am–5 pm and free with Museum admission, at the link in our bio.

See more of Yamashita’s work in the lobby, also on view as part of Drawing America now.

The absolutely brilliant @keithyamashita has a beautiful show opening today at the @brooklynmuseum. Titled, “What season is it America?” it includes original poetry, photography and ephemera created by Keith. In this video here, Keith and I have (what I think is) a soulful conversation about love and revealing who we really are, which was inspired by one of his magnificent poems. Keith will be in attendance for the full five days of the show, which will be up until Sunday. I’ll be visiting on Sunday and prepping for a full-on, deep dive Design Matters interview with Keith in the coming months. In the meantime, here is some additional information about is treasure of a exhibition:

A life has seasons. So does a family. So does a friendship. Perhaps a country does too.
—Joshua-Michéle Ross and Keith Yamashita

Sit down with artist Keith Yamashita to consider the state of the United States. A poet, photographer, and social-practice artist, Yamashita asks, “What season is it, America?” On October 21–25 he and sound artist Joshua Michéle Ross will be in residence at the Brooklyn Museum, inviting attendees to answer that question.

As you enter the Beaux-Arts Court, you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of poems, photographs, and pieces of Americana arranged in a 250-foot circle. Wander around the circle to read, look, and remember, selecting works that resonate with you. If you like, you can join Keith at a table to share what you chose and listen to others’ choices. A photograph might recall someone’s childhood. A poem might speak to someone’s grief. An image that ostensibly shows a shared American history may live very differently in the memories of two people sitting beside one another.

Ross will compose a new live score each day—responding in real time to the room and the people moving through it. The space will be filled with the gentle, unfolding soundtrack of the seasons.

In an artist preview last week, I sat with artist Keith Yamashita.

We looked at poetry.
We looked at photography.
We looked at moments in history.

But more than that, we talked.

We talked about a lot of things.

Here is a film about our conversation. I really do hope you can get to this happening this week at The Brooklyn Museum.
