To hold is a universal act, both burden and embrace. It can mean to grasp, to endure, to carry, to comfort, or to resist. Holding acknowledges the exhaustion and complexity of daily life: the struggle to keep holding on to hope, to dreams, to joy, even amid disappointment, sorrow, and uncertainty. by @kelli.kelley

Today we are highlighting details of works by LSU Painting Professor Kelli Scott Kelley! See these now in the exhibition ’In Focus: Artwork by LSU Faculty’ at the LSU Museum of Art until August 3, 2025.

Kelli Scott Kelley creates dreamlike narratives inhabited by hybrid beings, symbolic figures, and metaphorical imagery that explore humanity’s connection to—and impact on—the natural world. Her work draws from the personal, psychological, and sociopolitical, expressing an urgent concern for environmental decline while blending truth with elements of magic and the supernatural.

Kelley works in painting, drawing, and collage, often incorporating vintage linens and found materials that reference domesticity, women’s handicrafts, and ecological artmaking practices. These materials bring their own histories, enriching the visual and conceptual depth of her work. Her process includes time in nature, research, staged photography, and inspiration from visionary artists such as Fra Angelico, Hildegarde von Bingen, Remedios Varo, and Paula Rego.

Emotion and ambiguity are central to Kelley’s practice, encouraging viewers to engage with the enigmatic and look beyond the surface. The works featured in 'In Focus' are from her 2024–25 series 'Nature Morte,' which reflects on the delicate balance between life and death, decay and renewal, and invites contemplation of the beauty and fragility of the world around us. taken in LSU Museum of Art by @kelli.kelley
