THE WITCH BY FREIDA MCFADDEN

I have read lots of conflicting reviews about this one and honestly I must say I absolutely loved it. Pemberton estate lies in rural Massachusetts and has stood firm for centuries. We move between timelines constantly throughout the book.

We focus on Carolines character in 1692…Caroline lived here with her maid and her husband. Caroline is arrested and tried for witchcraft after her friend, who sold medicinal herbs was tried and hanged in the town square for the same thing. These chapters were so interesting as I do love a bit of history and just soaked up this section of the book.

When we switch to the present day we meet Julia. She moves into the same Pemberton manor to look after her elderly Grandma. Julia has always felt a presence there since being a little girl and is traumatised by the spooky goings on.

For hardcore Freida fans like myself it still had a couple of little twists in too. This was written outside of Freidas comfort zone but honestly it paid off. Excellent read.

I read this as a buddy read thanks to @x_charlieeexbooks_x Im just sorry I was waaaayyyy behind on it due to my book arriving in the post 3 days late!!!

📕 BOOK REVIEW 📕

WHEN YOU DISAPPEARED BY JOHN MARRS

My first read by John Marrs and now I want to devour everything he has ever written!

Catherine and Simon are childhood sweethearts who have a good marriage with three children, a nice home and a dog. Catherine wakes one morning to find her husband gone. Vanished. At first she thinks he’s on a run, but as time passes she cant understand where he is. He’s reported missing and all of their hearts are broken as he is presumed dead.

Simon is riddled with evil secrets and leaves the family home to travel the world leaving his family in despair. The book is written from both their points of view and the contrast between the two lives is heartbreaking. New year’s eve….Catherine is trying to hold the family together and Simon is popping champagne in France.

25 years later he arrives on the doorstep of the family home to unload himself of some truths and what you read will shock you to the core. So many jaw dropping surprises for the reader. These characters are written so well that I felt I knew them intimately. I hated Simon and his selfish, pig headed ways and I could have punched him. I think thats a sign of an amazing writer when you feel so strongly about a
Character. Also John writes from a female perspective so well. A lot of dysfunctional families are within these pages and Im sure everyone can relate to parts of it.

Five star read. Im now off to read all of John Marrs books

Well I only had one starting with K so I’ve introduced some authors I have on my shelves starting with K too.

🔪 KILL FOR ME KILL FOR YOU BY STEVE CAVANAGH

He’s one of the best authors around and I love Eddie Flynn the main character and even though Im not finished the series I want to be his friend. Courtroom dramas with cliff hanger scenes. Amazing 🤩

💧I DRANK FROM THE NILE BY KATYA DUNKO

An autobiographal story of survival and strength. Katya is an amazing woman and author and her novel will inspire you to build on your own self worth.

🧍‍♀️ THE GREAT ALONE BY KRISTIN HANNAH

I havent read this one as yet but shes one of my favourite authors who writes so beautifully, entangling history and emotion and breaking my heart with every single sentence

🇫🇷 THE ROOM ON RUE AMELIE BY KRISTIN HARMEL

I havent read this as yet but I love anything set in the WW2 era so will definitely be reading this one soon

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 THE FAMILY MAN BY KIMBERLEY CHAMBERS

Loved this one. Kimberley Chambers is an autobuy author for me. Her novels are gritty and raw and focus on gang members and criminals in the east end of london

📕 BOOK REVIEW 📕

THE TEACHER BY FREIDA MCFADDEN 🍎

Wow. What the absolute fuck have I just read? Full of mind blowing, deceiving, ugly characters but unputdownable and thrilling all at the same time.

Addie is a high school student at Caseham High. The previous year she got a highly reputable maths teacher in a lot of trouble where he was forced to resign. The teachers are now very wary of this troubled girl who tarnished the name of a great guy and the students are equally disgusted, leaving Addie with no one on her side.

Eve is the new maths teacher who is very cautious around Addie and watches her closely. Eve is in a loveless marriage with her extremely handsome husband whom also happens to work in the school.

A lot of teacher/student lust is at play here which can make you feel pretty uncomfortable whilst reading but also everything is so shocking you cant look away either. Which Im sure is exactly what Freida wants. A few twists in this book actually completely shocked me that I didn’t see coming at all.

This book seems to get quite a bit of bad press/criticism but actually I thought it was brilliant. Its so shocking and so unbelievable that it makes it a page turner.

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖

ITS ALWAYS THE HUSBAND BY C.L TAYLOR

Jude moves into a small village after her divorce and tries to befriend the school mamas group of bitchy and competitive women and also a single Dad called Will. There is chemistry between herself and Will and her daughter becomes best friends with his daughter but Jude is warned off Will as both of his ex wives are dead. And its always the husbands fault right?

Reading this book is like being dropped into the most gossipy little community full of lies and deceit. No one is as they seem. Nothing is expected and everything is a shock or a surprise.

📕 BOOK REVIEW 📕

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE BY SHARI LAPENA

I read this as a buddy read hosted by the fantastic @x_charlieeexbooks_x . As readers we are thrown straight into the thick of it when Roy a local farmer in a small village finds a girls naked body in his field who has been feasted on by vultures. This girl, Diana was a popular girl whom everyone in their surrounding area adored and she had no enemies. No one can grasp why someone could have murdered her or how.

We are introduced to everyone in her life and throughout reading we suspect almost everyone. Told from many POVs (even Dianas ghost), Shari really grasps how death can affect everyone surrounding you and different ways of grieving.

📕 BOOK REVIEW 📕

A BIT OF A STRETCH BY CHRIS ATKINS

A very interesting read. A diary written of the Authors time in prison and the conditions and stumbling blocks that being incarcerated can bring. Chris is a film maker and during making one of his films he tries to pull off a dodgy deal and ends up with a five year sentence.

Chris is middle class, well educated and well read and I believe this helped him enormously to fight the system when needed, not just for himself but other people. We get to really step inside the prison with him and feel what daily life was like. We meet some amazing and colourful characters along the way. I have found out there is a sequel to this so I’ll be picking up that one too.

NB: I went down to my local prison to take these photos and they probably have noted my registration thinking Im going to be smuggling drugs or something by taking photos from all different angles of the prison. I really should have thought it through. 🙈🙈

CHARITY SHOP BOOKS

Just putting this out there to any bookstagrammers locally to me. Myself and my sister co-founded a charity @thesensupportspace and we have opened up a charity shop go raise extra funds inside Greenside community centre. We have a load of adults and children’s books and would love to see any of you locals pop along and see us. We are open Tuesdays 10-2
