What IS biochar, really? 🤔

Thinking about making your own biochar?
Start small. Keep it simple. Experiment.

Use what you already have - your local feedstocks, compost ingredients, soil, and the plants you love to grow. Make a batch. Compost it. Test it out in pots or garden beds. See what works best for you.

The biggest misconception? That there’s one type of biochar and one perfect application rate. There isn’t! Every biochar is different. Every garden is different.

If you want step-by-step guidance, tips, and proven experiments to try, you’ll find it all in my book:

This is what a good burn pile looks like.

Built by Grayback Forestry, who honestly build the best piles I’ve seen. The logs are stacked tight and parallel so the pile holds its heat. A dry kindling pocket in the middle means quick flame and a clean burn. The big logs stay on the ground to feed the soil, so there’s no extra smoke from burning them.

A pile like this burns hot and clean and leaves glowing coals you can put out and save as biochar. It should give us at least 100 pounds from a pile just 5 feet tall.

What does it mean to “charge” your biochar?

Fresh biochar is very absorptive. Put it in the soil raw and it will soak up nutrients your plants need. Charging fills it with nutrients first.

A few ways to do it:
→ Mix it into your compost
→ Soak it in liquid fertilizer, like fish hydrolysate
→ Use urine. It’s full of nutrients, and it’s free.

Biochar doesn’t break down. It builds up in your soil every time you add it, so don’t put it all in at once.

If you add a lot in one go, it can hold onto too much nitrogen and your plants go short in the first year. The better way is to add a little every time you fertilize or amend your beds.

How do you add biochar to your beds?

We made these biochar burn piles in our local community forest 10 years ago. Here’s what the ground looks like now.

The soil is rich and black, and you can still see little chunks of char in it. If this had been a regular burn pile, there would be nothing but ash and bare minerals, and those sites can take a long time to recover.

This burn pile scar isn’t a scar at all. It’s healthy soil that blends right in with the rest of the forest understory.

Biochar isn’t cheap, so start small. Buy one bag, try it in a few pots or a single bed, and watch what happens. If you like the results, buy in bulk or learn to make your own.

The Biochar Handbook covers how to make it and use it well. Link in bio.

What material do you think works best to make biochar? by @kelpie.wilson

I have been working with biochar since 2006. In all that time the industry has grown slowly, waiting for the one application that would make it take off.

I think wildfire is it.

Over the same twenty years we have watched fires move out of the forest and into our towns. Santa Rosa in 2017. Paradise in 2018. Oregon in 2020.

The fuel that carries those fires is the same material we char. Thin it, burn it in a kiln on site, and put it back in the ground as soil that holds water.

The problem and the solution are the same material.
