I held off on sharing these for a long time. When a raw, fleeting moment feels this special, I struggle to post. As a wildlife photographer, there’s always a part of me that wants to keep special experiences close to my heart rather than feel like the moment is only worth what others perceive it as.

But this story is too good not to tell.

My partner and I were hiking in Elk Island National Park when a loud crack echoed through the air. Right in front of us, a tree collapsed across the hiking trail. We stopped dead in our tracks taken aback because there wasn’t even a breeze.

A second later, this little beaver waddled out from the brush, looking incredibly proud of his engineering work. The tree was far too large for him to drag whole, so he got straight to work slowly chopping it down to size. We quietly watched him for over an hour. It was a masterclass in nature’s persistence; he made incredibly quick work of it. Just like that, the pathway was clear, he vanished back into the wilderness, and this unforgettable wildlife encounter was over.

Fall colors are back in British Columbia 🍂💛

It was a treat being able to photograph some ducks in front of beautiful fall trees. To no surprise, the male pintails wouldn’t come into frame with the trees but these two female ducks did (mallard and pintail). Although a simple subject, I still love getting to show off these colors.

Out of a dark forest, a single black bear emerges to hunt salmon at first light.

This was such a fun experience. I’ve wanted to watch the bears during the salmon spawn for as long as I can remember. I never lived close enough and so never got around to it. This year, we finally lived close enough. We made the drive at 3 am and hiked in just as the sun rose. Although the bears stayed on the far shore, it was incredible to be in their home and watch them from a fly on the wall perspective.

Dowitcher foraging amongst seaweed. I waited for so long for a shorebird to pop into frame with the beautiful kelp that was glowing in the sun. Although it didn’t turn out quite as I envisioned, I still really love it! I suppose that’s the joy of wildlife photography 😋

Killdeer foraging along the tide at golden hour. Photographing shorebirds will always be my favorite. I greatly miss the sandy beaches that make for such clean foregrounds and backgrounds, but I’m trying to find more love for less “perfect” images.

There’s something about seeing a Bald Eagle perched above the water that never gets old.

One of my favourite parts of wildlife photography is getting to slow down and appreciate these moments.

Coastal wildlife always seems to deliver.
