In a world dominated by technology, The Sunday Letter Project is an invitation to balance and to recalibrate, reconnect, and return home. @thesundayletterproject believe that letter-writing is the perfect antidote to this generation’s dependence on screens - it allows us to slip back into a time where the world felt less frantic and more spacious. This global letter-writing initiative started in September 2025 by Rebecca and Karl of Wildflower Illustration Co. It invites people to take a free pledge to write one handwritten letter every Sunday to their friends, loved ones, strangers or themselves.

💌 There are two ways to join the project...

The Pledge: Participants can make a personal commitment to carve out a moment to write a letter every Sunday. You can sign here to help give us an idea of numbers of participants and receive weekly creative writing prompts, or simply write alongside us privately.

Letter Keeper Network: Our shop-to-shop pen-pal network uses local independent bookshops (like #kempsonthecorner), stationery shops and cafes acting as ‘Letter Keepers’ - allowing participants to exchange mail without sharing their home address.

💙 You can participate in this network without having signed the pledge, and there is no requirement to write to your new pen-pal every Sunday. Visit @thesundayletterproject or pop into the shop to learn more.

Georgia Moorhouse called in earlier this week to talk about her debut novel Imaginary Forces, which was shortlisted for the Women's Prize Discoveries Award and is publishing early 2027. So lovely meeting you!

📖 Robin is unreliable, unstable and utterly devoted to his oldest friend Henry. So when Henry's beloved mother - the novelist Marian Finch - dies unexpectedly, Robin is there to pick up the pieces. Henry comes into possession of a antiquarian bookshop and there - for a time - they build a life together. But grief can send us down unexpected paths.

Out Meow! Fiendish Felines is the newest addition to the @britishlibrary Tales of the Weird series. 🐾

📖 Aloof and haughty, slinking and sometimes sinister, cats are a mainstay of weird fiction for good reason: for all that we love them, they’re unknowable, unpredictable and a little uncanny. And, so, cats loom large in this collection that ranges from the sinister stories of Victorian greats such as Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker and Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu through to twentieth-century tales from renowned authors Dorothy L. Sayers, E.F. Benson and E. Nesbit.

You can find more Tales of the Weird in the shop, including Haunted Yorkshire, Doomed Romances, The Uncanny Gastronomic and more...

Dear @andy.burnham, @kevinhollinrakemp, and #AlecShelbrookeMP,

Rising business rates make it harder for independent bookshops like Kemps to grow, thrive, and continue doing what we love: bringing brilliant books, ideas, and people together. We’re a small & mighty team, and we believe indies are a vital part of our vibrant local communities - both of which are filled with so many wonderful small businesses! Of course we're backing the @booksellersassociation's call for targeted business rates relief for bookshops.

Bookshops are exactly the kind of businesses the Government says it wants thriving on our high streets, yet the business rates system is making it harder for them to survive, invest and grow. The research shows that independent bookshops not eligible for full Small Business Rates Relief face an average annual increase of £4,563 by 2029/30 – equivalent to selling 1,141 additional books every year just to cover the increase. Meanwhile, 85% of independent booksellers say the changes make them less likely to invest in stock, staffing, events or their premises.

We are asking Government to introduce similar targeted business rates relief for bookshops as pubs, make this a lasting legacy of the National Year of Reading, and meet with the us and booksellers to agree a fairer approach. An open letter to the Prime Minister and Chancellor was signed by an extraordinary 233 bookshops. We have also received support from Adam Kay, Donna Ashworth, Jamie Smart, Katherine Rundell, Patrick Ness, Philip Pullman, Rachel Joyce, Anthony Horowitz, Robin Ince, Maggie O’Farrell, Elle McNicoll, Patrice Lawrence, Florence Knapp and Lemn Sissay.

Will you stand with us, too?

From April 2027, pubs, clubs and live-music venues will receive a 20% reduction in business rates and, @andy.burnham, we noticed bookshops were excluded...
