Closing the communication gap.

A big part of effective communication is asking questions to get clarity.

Most men don’t ask the questions to get clarity.

I used to be horrible at this. I would just say, “OK, got it,” just to move on with the conversation.

I’ve learned that the best way to close the communication gap is for it to be:

1. Open - Share and receive information freely.

2. Honest - Be truthful and transparent.

3. Early - Address issues as soon as they arise.

4. Often - Engage in consistent dialogue to maintain understanding.

👇🏾Comment “Close the gap” and I’ll DM you the complete framework.

Thank you @boymankingtalk for a GREAT conversation.

Be honest with yourself for a second…

What stage of manhood are you operating in right now?

Real growth starts when a man can recognize when he’s slipping and correct himself.

Self-awareness is what separates boys from kings.

👑 New episode drops Monday with Kendall Ficklin breaking down the 5 stages of manhood.

GREAT session with the @rosehulman women’s basketball team and Head Coach @devrinn__paul , our focus for this session was:

The 4 Behaviors That Drive Every Team.

We talked about how their team functions based on the following:

• How they take action and make decisions

• How they interact with each other day to day

• The level of trust and transparency inside the team

• Their rhythm, patience, and how they work together toward a shared goal

We created space for open, honest conversation around how behavior shows up every day and how that behavior either helps or hurts the team’s ability to move forward.

They showed up, leaned in, and were willing to look at themselves as a team.

This kind of awareness changes how they practice, compete, and respond to pressure.

This is the work I love.

Being in the room.

Around the table.

Having the conversations that actually matter.

Connecting.

Communicating.

Addressing conflict when it shows up instead of letting it sit.

Working through things together, not around each other.

This isn’t a one-off moment.

It’s how teams build a way of working that lasts.

Where does your team feel it the most, connection, communication, or conflict?

At dinner I asked a question:

What are 3 decisions you’ve made in your life that you would change?

Then I asked, what’s the “common theme” behind why you made those decisions?

That theme… that’s a pattern.

When we look back and get honest about it, we can see it.

When we look forward and choose to change it, we grow from it.

And when we practice changing that “common theme,” we stop making the same decisions.

So here’s my question for you:

What’s the “common theme” you need to change?

GREAT client session today.

I shared a practical framework to help reduce friction and frustration.

It’s called.

Control What You Can Control

The Core Idea

Most frustration comes from trying to control things you can’t, while ignoring what you can.

Control is about ownership and closure.

What You Cannot Control

❌ Outcomes
❌ Other people’s reactions
❌ Timing
❌ External circumstances

Trying to control these creates anxiety and wasted energy.

What You Can Control

✅ Making the decision
✅ Having the conversation
✅ Saying no
✅ Finishing the task
✅ Setting the boundary
✅ Letting something go

These are within your reach, every time.

Why This Works
👉🏾 Open circles drain your focus.
👉🏾 Closed circles create momentum.
👉🏾 Clarity comes from closing what’s already open.

Bottom Line

You get control of your life, work, and leadership one closed circle at a time.

Stage 1: Cries for it (The Baby)

Stage 2: Yearns for it (The Youth)

Stage 3: Acts out for it (The Young Male)

Stage 4: Trades for it (The Grown Man)

Stage 5: IS it (The Mature Man)

Most men get stuck at Stage 4 and think they’ve arrived.

“I provide.”

“I handle my responsibilities.”

“I do what needs to be done.”

But Stage 4 is still a trap.

It’s transactional.

“I’ll give effort if the return makes sense.”

“I’ll show up as long as things are going my way.”

“I’ll stay solid as long as I’m not being tested.”

That way of living works… until it doesn’t.

Stage 5 isn’t about what you do.

It’s about who you are.

A Mature Man moves from character, not conditions.

He doesn’t need the environment to cooperate to stay grounded.

He doesn’t wait for clarity to take responsibility.

He doesn’t react to pressure.
He responds with intention.

Stage 4 works when life is smooth.

Stage 5 shows up when it’s not.

And that’s the difference.

We’re a team. Period.

And teams don’t get good by accident.

They practice. Consistently.

Same team.
Not opponents. Not competitors.

Same direction.
We agree on where we’re going, even when the path isn’t perfect.

No spectators.
Nobody on the sidelines. We both show up.

Being a team means:

• Staying engaged when it’s uncomfortable. (Connection)

• Talking early, not letting things pile up. (Communication)

• Addressing issues instead of avoiding them. (Conflict)

• Working together to solve and build. (Collaboration)

This is the foundation.

Everything else sits on top of this.

Hope this helps

Story Time

My 1st (and ONLY) Tattoo

My daughter broke down at the kitchen table and I realized I’ve been present, but not connected.

She didn’t need advice.
She needed access.
To my heart. My truth. My real voice.

She needed me to be VULNERABLE 🤯🤯🤯

I always thought I was open… but I guess I was just sharing what I was comfortable with.

Not what I was really feeling.

Here’s what that moment and the matching tattoo 🤷🏾‍♂️ taught me:

👉🏾 Listen without leading

👉🏾 Vulnerability > visibility

👉🏾 Connection before communication

👉🏾Just because you’re talking… doesn’t mean they’re listening.

👉🏾 You don’t know what you don’t know

This shifted my fatherhood.

And it shifted me.

Hope this helps
