Møns Klint, Denmark

Seventy million years ago, this surreal landscape was a warm tropical sea. Today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 130-meter chalk cliffs rising straight out of the Baltic.

Hiked the Fossil Route (which feels like a fossil hunt), and the Klintekongens Rige (the Cliff King’s Kingdom), which was named the best hiking route in Europe.

So incredible to finally make it here for a visit. taken in Møns Klint by @kenhowery

It was a true pleasure to celebrate Ólavsøka, or St. Olaf’s Wake, the Faroese national day, in these islands. I cheered on the rowing finals, attended the opening of parliament and heard the Prime Minister’s address to the nation, and joined the annual midnight singing and the chain dance that followed, arms linked until late. The traditional formal dress was everywhere: hand-knitted wool, silver clasps, generations deep.

I also climbed Slættaratindur, the country’s highest peak, and admired the puffins bringing food to their young on Mykines island.

To the friends who welcomed me, and to the Faroese across all eighteen islands, thank you. I’ll be back. 🇫🇴 taken in Torshavn, Faroe Islands by @kenhowery

It was a tremendous honor to attend last month’s grand opening of As Seen Below, American artist James Turrell’s 100th and largest ever Skyspace, at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, alongside the Royal Family.

This breathtaking, permanent installation is the culmination of over a decade of vision, dedication, and craftsmanship from everyone involved. A true masterpiece of light, space, and perception, and a beautiful example of American Danish collaboration in the arts.

Grateful to have witnessed this moment in Aarhus. 🇺🇸🇩🇰

After hearing about it many times this past year, I finally made it to Skagen for a visit. Skagen is the northernmost point in Denmark, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat (essentially the North Sea and the Baltic Sea) collide at Grenen.

This is also where the Skagen Painters set up shop in the late 1800s — Krøyer, Michael and Anna Ancher, chasing that light everyone still talks about. Now I see why.

Beautiful beaches, long golden evenings, and no shortage of good conversation with the many Danes who live here or come here for their summer break. Northern Denmark delivered. taken in Skagen top of Denmark by @kenhowery

Toured the real Viking ships at the soon to be reopened Museum of the Viking Age in Oslo, then actually sailed on Draken (the ship heavily featured in Odyssey), before hitting the Norway premiere and celebrating with the whole crew after. Absolutely unreal day. by @kenhowery

Happy 250th birthday, America! We opened the doors of the newly renovated U.S. Ambassador’s Residence, Rydhave, to celebrate 250 years of American independence, and 225 years of unbroken ties between the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark. It was an honor to welcome over 1,000 guests for an evening that meant a great deal to me personally.

We built “The Great American Journey” across the garden — the West, the Midwest, the South, the East — each corner telling a different piece of the American story. Pretzels, burgers on the grill, a Mustang parked under the trees, Lego portraits of the Founding Fathers, street signs pointing to New York and Boston, and our Tree of Dreams, where guests wrote down what they hope the next 250 years will bring — for America, and for the world. I read those cards myself afterward, and they stayed with me.

Aloe Blacc and Everclear took the stage as the sun went down, and watching that lawn fill with dancing, singing, and Danes and Americans arm in arm — that’s a memory I’ll carry with me for a long time.

Standing at that podium earlier in the evening, I felt exactly why this relationship matters to me — not as an abstraction, but as something I get to witness up close every day I’m here. 225 years of uninterrupted ties is something we keep building together, one generation at a time. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this a celebration to remember. Happy 4th of July, and Happy 250!

🇺🇸 Hard to think of a better way to celebrate America’s 250th birthday than attending the grand opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota with my family.

A few things TR gave us:
🌲 Our “Conservation President” — protected ~230 million acres of public land
🏞️ A driving force behind the National Park System
🚢 Launched the building of the Panama Canal
🕊️ First American to win the Nobel Peace Prize (1906)
🏛️ Officially named the White House in 1901
🌍 A true adventurer, from African safaris to the Amazon

Also, very fun to see the Teddy Roosevelt drone show with 1776 drones, visit and hike Theodore Roosevelt National Park, play the Bully Pulpit Golf Course, and bike one part of the legendary Maah Daah Hey Trail. taken in Theodore Roosevelt National Park by @kenhowery

A memorable afternoon at Gladsaxe Stadium watching the Nordic Storm, Scandinavia’s first professional American football team, defeat the Paris Musketeers 48-16 to stay perfect on the season.

It was an honor to meet the team’s American players, head coach John Shoop, a former NFL offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator Brandon Noble, both bringing real NFL pedigree to Copenhagen. A special thrill to also meet Hjalte Froholdt, the Danish standout currently starting at center for the Arizona Cardinals, and a great example of how far Nordic talent can travel.

A highlight: stepping onto the field at kickoff for the coin toss.

The Storm count among their leadership American co-owner Stephen Schueler, President of the American Club Denmark, and it’s a pleasure to see this U.S.–Danish partnership building something special in Scandinavia. 🇺🇸 🇩🇰 taken in Gladsaxe Stadion by @kenhowery

It was a real pleasure to visit Greenland last week for my third visit. We officially opened the new U.S. Consulate building in downtown Nuuk, two years ahead of schedule, while marking America’s 250th birthday. Enjoyed attending Future Greenland, and meeting with the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, and many of the top CEOs shaping the region’s future. taken in Nuuk, Greenland by @kenhowery

Ran the Royal Run 10K in Copenhagen with work colleagues on Monday, the same race King Frederik X finished his day with, after running three legs across Denmark. He created this event in 2018 to get all of Denmark moving, and 112,000 people registered nationwide this year. I saw firsthand how fit the Danes are, but what stayed with me was the support they give every runner, no matter the pace. A real privilege. #royalrun taken in Royal Run by @kenhowery

It was a true pleasure to finally visit Pituffik Space Base in Greenland last month, which is the northernmost U.S. military base in the world, while hosting ambassadors and colleagues from Canada, Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, and the UK.

The landscape alone is something I won’t forget: musk ox, polar foxes, and arctic hares against scenery that’s genuinely breathtaking. And from its ‘Top of the World’ vantage point, Pituffik supports missile warning, space surveillance, and scientific research. taken in Pituffik Space Base by @kenhowery
