Forty years ago! Forty! I was a skycap at the airport.

Today I was at the curb and checked to see if somehow, someway, anyone I worked with was still there.

Torin and Cakey. Cakey the man in the center was hired two weeks after me in 1984!

I walked up and Cakey said, “Can I help you sir”? And I said “yes I need a hug”. That threw him and then he looked up and said Sipes!

I went in apprehensive. Would the knees make it the first day? Would my stamina sustain? Am I too old for this now?

The result? Knees held up. Stamina by a thread. No, I am not too old. And the amount of mental toughness I gained was inspiring.

I smelled Wisconsin today.

I remember my childhood names for grasses and secret flowers. I remember where a toad may live and what time the birds awaken in the summer—and what trees and seasons smelled like—how people looked and walked and smelled even. This picture was one of the happiest days of my life.

As I trained for the third time on this 75 mile, four day hike I will endeavor on in Pennsylvania in October; this picture is the peak of the second time I did it.

The reason it means so much to me, is the accomplishment I made in that particular hike and the man I stand next to. Mike Peddicord.

On the second day in the spring of 2025. I finished ahead of the pack, not bad for an old guy. But ,after 34 miles in two days, my body shut down. I dehydrated to the point of puking my soul out and then was out of commission for the next 36 hours.

The last day is an 18 miler with the last 6 miles called agony and misery. Named that for after 12 miles you go downhill for two straight miles, and then basically go up 3/4 a mile, down 3/4 of a mile, up 3/4 a mile, and down 3/4 of a mile to finish.

Somehow, after 36 hours of checking out, my body said yes to this particular day. And so I hiked this last day with my friend Shane (the man in the third picture here) keeping me on pace.

Somehow I led the pack that day again and yet that wasn’t the important part, the important part was to have completely failed on the third day and to rebound on the fourth day. And so if you see a really happy Kenny in this picture, it is real joy. Standing next to a couple of my friends, feeling accomplished, fascinated at what my body did, and how good I felt.

And Mike, who is the ultimate sign of encouragement, is the one that is pictured here and sits on my desk to remind me of how hard we worked for that smile that week. And how, no matter how far you descend, joy can be waiting for you. Just as Mike was when I got off the trail.
