This past weekend was one of the most liberating moments I’ve experienced in a while. There’s something special that happens in our hearts when we learn to become fluent in honesty; it makes room for liberation of the soul. My friend Zach said to me, “I’ve fallen out of love with perfection…” and I have to agree that I too have fallen out of love with perfection, and performance, and pretenses, and pressure. It’s burdensome and counterproductive to the liberation we all truly desire. The transformation I witnessed happen over the span of 3 hours in the heart of so many proved to me that the real work is in the thick of the trenches in deep community where the atmosphere so gently demands honesty and accepts nothing less. Throughout the night I sat and saw the justice of restoration tangible in the form of tears. It was remarkable. This is the real work. It’s not always easy, but it’s simple. It’s not always perfect, but it’s beautiful. I am a firm believer that freedom will only come through the passage of honesty and my hope and prayer is that humanity collectively will grow fluent in that some day soon. 🤍

I’m going to be honest… I have no idea what I am doing. ☀️

I often get the question, “what do I do for a living?” Some days I’ll have the confidence to tell them that I’m a poet and I make films about art, mental health, & humanity. Other days I’ll be filled with doubt and fear and timidly reply, oh, I work in media, and other days I will simply say, “I'm a storyteller.” The latter, of which I think, is the truest. I believe that poets and all artists, for that matter, are just note-takers of the universe and share their notes with the world through whatever medium they choose.

I never know if my words or images mean much or anything, that’s, unfortunately, the curse of sharing your art on social media. Still, I often think of some of the best advice I was ever given as a filmmaker, “don’t shoot for an audience; make the film for the one person who needs the most.” More often than not, my poems are written as little note cards to myself for the things I am dealing with. But over the course of the last year, I’ve gotten to fold those notes into paper airplanes and shove them into bottles and send them out into the universe via these small moments on the internet. Over that time, I’ve gotten the chance just to see what happens when you just put a little bit of hope into seeing where things land.

I am just a storyteller, a kid with a somewhat irrational love for life and a passion for making space for people to feel safe and believe in a better today and tomorrow. I never know where these notes will land, but in the past couple of days, I’ve gotten to see the beauty that happens when everyone brings all the notes they collected together.

And I couldn’t be more thankful for that. All of this to say…
