Hey everyone, this image is to announce a new series I will be working on in 2025. I’m not abandoning dance…just adding an additional passion.

My posts this week refer to Neiman Marcus…as many of us who worked for this iconic store are filled with memories stirred by its passing.

As many of you know, I left Dallas and lived in the bustling metropolis of Taos, New Mexico for 12+ years. During my time there, art director Georgia Christenson reached out and hired me to shoot black-and-white portraits for a Father’s Day catalog. The subjects were a cross-section of interesting Dallas fathers and their children. I shot the job over three days at Rocky Powell’s beautiful downtown Dallas studio. One of my subjects was minimalist painter Otis Jones and his daughter Zoe. I moved back to Dallas a few years after shooting this, and Otis and I became close friends. He turned me onto South Side on Lamar (the former Sears warehouse converted into lofts), and I ended up living & working there for 20 years!

With the closing of the Neiman Marcus flagship location last week, many of us are reflecting on our experiences there. My first gig with Neiman’s was as a fashion shooter. Art director Michael Matthews hired me to shoot for their in-house magazine. It was an amazing opportunity because the entire crew (models, hair stylists, makeup artists, etc.) came from New York. The store representative who attended all the studio sessions was a commanding woman named Daria Retian. As Vice President of Creative Services, she acted as the “arbiter of style” for Neiman’s couture identity. Most people (as I learned through the grapevine) were terrified of her, and I think it was because she always said exactly what was on her mind. As fate would have it... we got along great, though. I loved her honesty and bowed in deep admiration to her impeccable taste.

Regarding the photo you see here, the crew had arrived at 8:00 am and the first model stepped out onto the set about 9:30. Daria (a chain smoker) looked her over for about 5 seconds and then waved her hand and said (in her Egyptian accent): ”No…that is not Montana. Do it over.” The model disappeared back into the dressing room and didn't reappear until 10:30. Daria looked her over one more time and, exhaling a stream of smoke, said, “Yes…this is correct.” She then looked over to me and said: "You may shoot it.”

And off we went.

Circling back to one of my earlier dance photos. Stephanie Godsave and Alex Brown were best friends, and both were members of the @brucewooddance Company at the time. I made this just before Alex left town. Stephanie is still with Bruce Wood and is always such a joy to watch.

As many of you know, I used to live and work out of a loft at South Side on Lamar in downtown Dallas. In 2012, I met an aspiring young actor while riding the elevator. His name was @treytucker . A little while later, I made this photo of him, and he left for L.A. shortly thereafter.

A few years ago, I saw a promo for a TV series about pro wrestlers called Heels. I thought I recognized him, so I looked him up. Turns out he is in the series and has also been in several films…i.e., The Space Between Us, The Matchmakers Playbook, The Outpost, What Lies Below! Go Trey!

Was SO EXCITED when Sharon Summerall Henley reached out and asked to be included in this year's "Women of Style: Beauty After 50" series. Sharon was a successful model back in the day, and we worked together many times. Loved her amazing hair back then…and still love it today. Wow!

As most of you know, I'm in my 70s and have been a commercial photographer my entire life.

That means that I spent half of my career in the “film era”. One of the things we would do back then was shoot “lighting tests” before an upcoming job so that we could evaluate the lighting, color filtration, etc .

I was going through my archives the other day and ran across this shot of me
as the “test” stand-in for an editorial fashion shoot.

My lovely fur coat was to be in one of the shots. Ahhhh…youth!
