Its been a year since my mom lost her battle with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s); when we originally received the diagnosis, the doctors gave a timeline of 3-5 years but fast-forward 18 months later we were in the hospital saying goodbye.

For my mom it was bulbar-onset, and as the disease progressed she very quickly lost her ability to speak and things like breathing and swallowing became increasingly difficult, eventually near-impossible.
As the disease aggressively progressed, eventually her muscles couldn’t function - she moved with a wheelchair or walker and struggled with basic tasks. Her longtime partner Kevin spent the better part of a year looking after her until she had eventually had enough. My mom ultimately made the decision to enlist in the MAID program, although she ended up having to be hospitalized prior to that appointment where she eventually passed. I kept hanging on to that optimistic timeline, thinking we would have more time and then one day she was gone.

I have spent a lot of time reflecting over the last year and its been a very tough year. My mom and I had a complicated relationship at times, but through it all I loved her deeply and miss her very much. My only real intent in writing this I suppose is to help myself maneuver through this stage of grief.

Give your mom an extra hug next time you see her. Call your grandma. ALS is brutal. Tough day but I’ll get through it. by @kentsmess
