Frank Lloyd Wright’s concept of compression and release was meant to move people through his architecture. Hallways in Wright-designed houses are often narrow, uncomfortable spaces, transitions between living spaces. Although Wright viewed hallways as wastes of space, they were necessary for functional flow throughout the house.

Highlights from a recent interview with Philip Palumbo in the Pittsburg Post Gazette. Writer Mary Ann Thomas touches on the history of Kentuck Knob, originally built for local ice cream business owners I.N. and Bernardine Hagan. The Hagans managed to leverage the connection their friends, the Kaufmanns, had to the world's most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, who’d designed Fallingwater for them.

The article continues with a look into the Palumbo acquisition of Kentuck Knob, what’s been added to the property, preservation and future plans for the National Historic Landmark museum and sculptural artworks.

Philip shares the story behind the framed photo of his father Lord Peter Palumbo with Princess Diana (in the infamous black ‘revenge’ dress) and some of the bestselling favorites from the gift shop, many of which are exclusive to Kentuck Knob, lots are available to buy online and some that are only available on site to buy after a tour visit…

Mums (Chysanthemums) are a staple of autumn landscaping. We think they're a great addition to Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, we have them in red, yellow and white outside and in. Which is your favorite?

They were first cultivated thousands of years ago in China, and thought to symbolize a long and healthy life. Hundreds of years later the beautiful colors are one of the early signs that fall has begun. The blooms are triggered by the shorter daylight hours at this time of year when buds form naturally.

Frank Lloyd Wright is definitely one of the most well-known architects, though the people who were involved with the construction hold just as much importance to the story of Kentuck Knob. The Hagans hired an array of talented stone masons, carpenters, and an experienced contractor to realise the project.

Kentuck Knob is comprised of 58 foundational angles, only 2 being right angles. Visitors can feel Wright's compression and release technique through the distinctive angles, aligned with a blend of sandstone, cypress wood, and flagstone.

“Nature is ever changing—the color of the light changes throughout the day, the color of the season changes. But architecture is static, inert, and that creates a dialogue between the human made—architecture—and the organic and dynamic—the natural world.” –Richard Meier
