Destination Deco: Steel City Deco, Day 2 - Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob

ADSNY enjoyed the most perfect autumn day with Frank Lloyd Wright!

We stood in the postcard shot of Fallingwater in ideal conditions: sunlight pouring through the trees and casting dramatic shadows across the house. Our knowledgeable guides shared the stories and intricacies of the home, and every quiet corner had something new for us to notice.

We then visited Kentuck Knob, where we admired more of Wright’s innovation and enjoyed the wonderful art curated throughout the grounds by the property’s current stewards.

This day is one none of us will forget (which seems to be becoming a theme on this trip).

Day two was spiritual. Follow along for more Art Deco discoveries!

Red Maples of Kentuck with a foggy Yough River Valley in the background 🍁🔥 10.14.26.

Isaiah 55:10–11.
For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

2 Corinthians 12:9.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

I came for the architecture… and ended up solving a beautiful little mystery. 🔎✨

Tucked away in a dimly lit art studio at Frank Lloyd Wright’s @kentuckknob, a portrait of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—the famous German-American modernist architect behind “less is more”—stopped me in my tracks.

But it wasn’t Mies who caught my eye. It was the photograph. The dramatic play of light and shadow, a face emerging from darkness… the unmistakable work of Yousuf Karsh/Հովսեփ Քարշ, the legendary Armenian-Canadian master portraitist behind THE iconic Winston Churchill photograph and many other notable figures in history. And there, partially obscured in the corner, was his signature. 📸

I mentioned it to our guide, Anna, who invited me to investigate after the tour.

She pulled up the art inventory:
Photographer: UNKNOWN.
Date: UNKNOWN

A little detective work confirmed it. It was a Karsh!

But the discovery was about to become far more personal…

As Anna began reading his biography, she noticed his birthplace: “Born in Turkey, so he’s…”

“Actually…” I interjected.

Karsh was Armenian, and like my own grandfather, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, in which 1.5 million Armenians were systematically murdered by the Ottoman Turkish Authorities. That’s three out of every four Armenians living on their ancestral, indigenous lands. Seventy-five percent of a people.

The painful irony of a man who spent his life capturing the identities of others, only to nearly have his own mistaken for that of the very nation that sought to erase him—and who’s government continues to deny the Armenian genocide today.

Anna understood immediately. Out came a pen and neon-blue Post-it to flag the museum record to note. ✍🏼🇦🇲

And what are the odds? Of all the visitors, on all the days, another Armenian—and descendant of genocide survivors—happened to recognize his work tucked away in that little studio. Continued in comments….👇🏼💭

The Pennsylvania view (and house) I’d give my entire life savings for. 😩 Late architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s @kentuckknob is tucked into the beautiful Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, and the view from its grounds overlooks the Youghiogheny River Gorge and miles of rolling mountains. The house itself is an architectural masterpiece that perfectly marries modern architecture with Mother Nature… but there is nothing like this view in the gorgeous Laurel Highlands. This is forever one of those places that reminds me why Pennsylvania is everything and more.

“Nature is ever changing—the color of the light changes throughout the day, the color of the season changes. But architecture is static, inert, and that creates a dialogue between the human made—architecture—and the organic and dynamic—the natural world.” –Richard Meier

Autumn is our favorite season to see Frank Lloyd Wright's organic architecture within the mountains of the Laurel Highlands
