🌀 We visited the village a Chef Maasai called Mepkori in Esilai, Tanzania. The second we arrived, I saw the gracious women wearing colored textiled with their many children welcoming us. My first instinct was “I must talk with the Mkunga (midwife) of this village”, and I did.

In a Maasai community, when a woman gives birth, she does not face it alone. She enters a hut surrounded by women: the mkunga, her neighbours, her mother, her aunties, women who have walked this path before and even children are allowed. Because to become a mother is a collective passage.

The village continue to cather to Mamatoto (the mother and child) for a minimum of 6 months postpartum. Mama is not allowed to do chores, to touch cold water, to cook.. Everything is done for her as her only duty is to rest and recover!

Words cannot describe the initiation that Iceland is. By far, the most beautiful, and in some ways, challenging destination I’ve ever been to. Roadtripping the country, from left, right and center. Having nowhere to be, no clock to watch. Camping in a tent through rain storms, wind, 0 degrees. This place is not comparable. Not one day has passed without crying of gratitude.
