“Because grapes possess the talent to express terroir, the first step toward making fine wine is deciding which grape variety to grow in which soil. Sometimes one has no choice; for red Hermitage only Syrah is legally permitted. However, like a painter who chooses his surface and who blends the pigments on his palette to create different color tones, a winemaker in the southern Rhône has a variety of soil types and up to 22 permitted grape varieties with which to work. The story of Charles Joguet is one of the first Kermit tells in “Adventures on the Wine Route.” The tale is a vivid part of KLWM lore, conjuring scenes of bottle after bottle of old Chinon, but it’s also just the opening chapters of a story that continues to be written. Nearly thirty years ago, to pursue his career as an artist, Charles sold the domaine to his longtime partners, the Genet family, and the current vigneron, Kevin Fontaine, now has almost twenty vintages under his belt. Though their part in the domaine’s history may lack the dramatic flair of Charles—I’m pretty sure everyone still has all their fingers—it is marked by a pursuit of quality along with steadfast stewardship of the domaine’s legendary vineyards. If you’ve enjoyed a bottle of Joguet Chinon in the past twenty years, you’re part of this story, too.

Our August newsletter is out!

The dapper fellows captured on the cover by @joanie.bonfiglio are Filippo, Filippo, and Tim of Castagnoli—one of the most spectacular properties we’ve ever visited, perched high on a hill in Castellina, in the heart of Chianti Classico. The staked vines that dot their steep terraced hills resemble those of the northern Rhône, but with the olive trees, surrounding forest, and an abundant scent of wild sage in the air, the ambiance and landscape are distinctly Tuscan.

“Northern Italy is a wine enthusiast’s paradise,” Kermit wrote back in 1988. “No one will know everything there is to know about this little universe where travelers can be astonished by the rustic deliciousness of a carafe wine in a country inn or the grandiose aspirations of a dense young Barolo.”

Domaine Giacometti’s vineyards live in the largely uninhabited Agriate desert, a rugged nature reserve with a jagged coastline that was once the “breadbasket” of Corsica, as its name (which refers to “agrarian”) suggests.

At a recent visit to the domaine, siblings Sarah and Simon served up a casual lunch, including Corsican charcuterie, sheep’s milk cheeses, and a summer tart layered with garden-grown veggies. A few chilled bottles followed suit, like the lush and energetic Cuvée Sarah blanc and their 2025 rosé, bursting with sour cherry and watermelon, citrus peel and thyme. Served alongside a tarte aux fraises, it was hard to distinguish where the taste of real strawberry began and the wine’s fruit ended. This vast, inhospitable part of the Île de Beauté is, in fact, quite welcoming!
