Meet our Artist of the Week: Kerry Sutton, a mixed-media artist born and raised in Seattle who currently lives in Federal Way. He works with various media, including recycled materials such as shoeboxes, wood scraps, street signs, and more.

"I tend to be inspired by the materials themselves; breathing new life into the forgotten and discarded items of our everyday life, finding joy and reclamation in giving these items meaning and new life. This work feels incredibly meaningful, as it often functions as a symbolic apparatus; taking the painful and defeating moments of life and seeking to create something beautiful out of the forgotten and broken."

I’m honored to be part of Between the Sea and Me, an ocean-focused group exhibition presented by @pangeaseed and @europagalleryseattle co-curated by @stepfrae

Formed from 9 different recycled shoe-boxes, I hand cut each piece to form my artwork “As the Ocean Cries Out” to explore our role in sustaining.

The exhibition brings together Pacific Northwest and regional artists exploring our personal relationships with the ocean through memory, emotion, place, imagination, and responsibility.

Join us for the opening reception during Pioneer Square’s First Thursday Art Walk:
Thursday, August 6
6–11:30 PM
Europa Gallery
401 2nd Ave S, Suite 103, Seattle

The exhibition will also be on view August 10–13.

Original artworks created for the exhibition will be available for purchase, with a portion of sales supporting PangeaSeed’s nonprofit creative work for ocean impact.

𝙉𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙖 𝘼𝙝𝙢𝙚𝙙
Through my practice, I consider what’s passed down and how we value it - from recipes to generational trauma. How do you hold onto a culture through colonization, Partition, and immigration? Where do memories of a lost loved one live on through the body, the environment, and time?

𝙍𝙚𝙪𝙗𝙚𝙣 𝙫𝙤𝙣 𝙃𝙤𝙚𝙫𝙚
We witness our environment through the lens of our memories and senses. A reflection in a puddle, the shape of a tree, the texture of a brick wall, all can immediately draw to mind images from the past which then fold into the present moment to create the unique synthesis of past, present, and future which we call experience. Further, an environment carries the memories of its past on its skin, and in its soil. Scars and wrinkles of both the organic passage of time, and the changes we humans have wrought upon a given landscape.

𝙆𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙮 𝙎𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙤𝙣
Primarily using recycled materials has functioned as a symbolic apparatus, to create beauty and purpose out of pain. This directly ties to my upbringing; the joy and pain of being from South Seattle, and the subsequent intentionality to make purpose of, and see beauty in, the forgotten and discarded. I love making work as a part of this community because a legacy of environmental and social activism is embedded within the work of the artists that are from here.
