I WISH TO BE ALIVE AGAIN

Grandma’s journey taught me that I needed to live. I was too wrapped up in external opinions, judgement, failure, and embarrassment to express myself outside of what others were used to. I had fallen back into that loop of safety, which basically means stagnancy.

Fear crippled me from exploring outside of myself and diluted my essence. But hearing grandma on her 91st birthday say, ‘I wish to be alive again,’ provoked something bittersweet in me.

I wish my grandma could live again and experience all the things she missed, but I also realised I’ve been crippling my own existence. Instead of trying to fast track to the good parts, I needed to take my time to just grow without putting a timer on it.

This was the first song I recorded at home a few months after my grandma passed. I had never experienced physical or emotional pain like this before, and it was the beginning of a very long journey with depression (though I didn’t know it at the time).

A raw, unedited time capsule of songs recorded when I felt lost, empty, and scared of who I might become. If I free-fell deeper into the rabbit hole, would I make it out the other side?

These songs appeared during that time, quiet reminders journeying through the rabbit hole reminding me that I wasn’t alone.

Encouraging me to feel it, breathe with it, and keep going.
