🌱 CLEAN LAND. CLEAN WATER. ACCOUNTABILITY. 👊

Our three biggest towns are standing together to demand action on contaminated land and pollution.

Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough Town Councils have all called for Zane’s Law - named in memory of seven-year-old Zane Gbangbola, who died during severe flooding in Surrey in February 2014.

The proposed law would help ensure potentially contaminated land is identified, information is made public, sites are regularly inspected and necessary clean-ups take place.

And crucially, those responsible for pollution should pay - not local people.

Our countryside, waterways and natural environment are precious. Yet pollution and contamination threaten the places we love, our wildlife and the legacy we leave for future generations.

💚 We have a responsibility to protect our environment - and to hold polluters accountable.

It’s time to stop making communities pay the price for other people’s pollution.

Do you agree we need stronger laws in place to protect our land and hold polluters to account?

Recently, councillors @benjameson_kettering and @james.towns.66 visited Sandy Hill Farm outside Rothwell for an event organised by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) to mark Back British Farming Day. 🚜

It was a great opportunity to see a working farm first-hand, meet local farmers and hear about the opportunities and challenges facing agriculture today.

We heard about the vital role farmers play in food production, environmental stewardship and supporting the rural economy - as well as the increasing pressures they face. 🌱

As Greens, we recognise the importance of food security and the challenges that climate change is creating for food production and reliable incomes for farmers.

Smaller farms can be particularly vulnerable to these pressures, including competition from larger operations and businesses backed by private equity and financial investment that may be better able to absorb price shocks.

Thank you to the Spendlove family, who hosted us at their mixed livestock farm, where looking after wildlife and nature is at the heart of their approach to farming. 🐄

We discussed how farming and environmental management can work together, alongside wider issues affecting local food production and the future of British agriculture.

We also heard about the challenges and opportunities facing farming in Northamptonshire, including those arising since Brexit and from climate change, particularly this year’s extreme summer temperatures and drought.

Supporting farmers, protecting our natural environment and ensuring people have access to secure, sustainable food - including through eating more plant-based food - are all part of building a resilient local food system and a healthier community. 💚

Young people are speaking up.

At last week’s council meeting, a young person spoke passionately about the climate crisis and why it matters to them and their generation.

Local young people cannot understand why our council is choosing to step back from it’s commitments to treating climate change as an emergency.

This is following the hottest Northamptonshire summer on record, where we are seeing the climate crisis visibly affecting our area, closing our schools, affecting people’s ability to live, work and sleep.

For young people, this is their future at risk - and yet they don’t have a say.

They deserve a fair seat at the table. They deserve to be listened to. 🌍💚

Why are you protesting today? 💚🌏

We took to the streets outside the NNC meeting last night to ask YOU why standing up for our climate matters and why we refuse to stay silent in the face of Reform’s actions.

We think your councillors should know that withdrawing the Climate Emergency declaration doesn’t make the climate crisis disappear, instead it just sweeps it under the rug.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and made their voices heard. To quote the video, if we all do a little we can be part of a big change 💪

A contest to be the “Reformiest Reformers ever to Reform”?

Last night at NNC Full Council, we were asked to debate removing the Climate and Environment Emergency declaration - a move which, as we heard during the debate, won’t materially change how the Council operates.

I’m still struggling to understand the practical point of the motion, other than allowing Reform to claim that they’ve “cancelled the climate emergency”.

And the irony is that this summer, the effects of a changing climate actually delayed local democracy, when NNC had to postpone a Council meeting because of the high temperatures. That was an evening meeting - as someone who works in a role involving manual handling outside, I can tell you it was a lot hotter than that.

The climate emergency deserves real action, not gesture politics, and our communities need investment and resilience to deal with the challenges ahead.

That’s what I want to see from our Council: less political theatre, and more action that actually makes a difference. taken in Corby Cube by @ketteringgreenparty

“Who does this decision serve?” 🤨

This morning Green Group Leader Cllr Emily Fedorowycz spoke to BBC Radio Northampton on North Northamptonshire Council withdrawing the Climate Emergency.

Emily highlights that only Reform is ripping up climate emergencies across the country.

Reform are paid for by fossil fuel and cryptocurrency billionaires, it’s hard not to draw a link between that and this decision. taken in Kettering, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom by @ketteringgreenparty

We will not be ignored 💪

Thank you so much to the incredible support from those who chose to come out and protest for our climate last night at full council 👏

While Reform may have chosen to pretend the climate emergency does not exist, you all showing up yesterday in solidarity motivates us to keep going. Reform cannot ignore you when you show up like this.

There were some incredible public and councillor speeches which we will share here over the coming days.

Thank you all again, we are in this together 💚 taken in Corby Cube by @ketteringgreenparty

This morning I’ve been speaking to ITV News about Reform’s proposal at tonight’s meeting.

This evening they plan to roll back the Climate Emergency declaration made by our council, following similar actions from a number of Reform councils.

Around 90% of UK councils have made this commitment, and it’s only Reform councils reneging on this - why?

Sadly this is real step backwards - and achieves absolutely nothing for local people.

We need leadership on such a serious topic, and with 4 in 5 people actively worried about climate change, this just shows Reform aren’t listening.

We need people who represent the interests of the local community, not those who only act in the interest of their donors.

The “debate” will take place tonight, and 29 members of the public registered to speak on this showing the strength of local feeling.

Farmers, businessmen, teachers, young people, lawyers, doctors - all people already being affected by climate change in North Northants, have asked to speak.

The meeting is at the Corby Cube today at 6pm.

Reform are peddling climate denial.

Climate change remains a major concern for local people. Recent polling shows that 74% are worried about climate, according to Ipsos results and 78% from the Government’s own surveys.

People are looking to our elected representatives to lead on this issue.

However at tomorrow’s council meeting, Reform will propose to rescind the council’s Climate Emergency declaration. A move we fully object to.

At such a critical time, we need bold leadership and action to protect local people - practical solutions to reduce bills and improve housing, measures to mitigate flooding, to help support farmers through drought, & help people be more resilient in their communities.

We are aware there will be a publicly organised protest from 5:30pm outside the Corby Cube before the meeting starts at 6pm. All are welcome to attend and express their views on the council’s proposal.

Today, on @worldcleanupday.uk , our Green councillors, members and friends - including the @ketteringwombles , who do a fantastic job keeping our town tidy throughout the year - joined our monthly litter pick! 💚

Starting at the Warren, we split off across the area and collected 20 bags of litter, along with a whole assortment of other items.

Philip also took the opportunity to tidy up the entrance to Edmund Street - well done, Philip! 👏

Our litter picks take place from 11am–1pm on the third Sunday of every month, and we’ll be looking at publishing our locations further in advance.

Litter picking makes a really visible difference to our streets and communities. If you’d like to join us and help make an even bigger impact, we’d love to see you there! 💚 taken in The Warren, Kettering by @ketteringgreenparty
