“My work is about the fabric of reality and how we create meaning through stories and symbols. I work from observation, photo reference, memory and imagination equally as they are inextricably intertwined in creating our perception of reality. My practice is driven intuitively but I pursue my ideas with a methodical rigor. I make use of illusions and play with creating realities as a way of exploring the authenticity of experience. I think of my works as poems, problems to be solved, or games of my own creation. I’m not interested in providing answers with my work, I’m inviting others to explore with me.”

Originally from Colorado, Kevin O’Hara Received a BFA in Drawing in painting in 2013 from the University of Colorado, Boulder. In 2017 Kevin moved to New York where he has lived and worked since. He made his New York solo debut with the show Colossus at Marvin Gardens Gallery. Followed by group exhibitions with Deana Evans Projects, Field of Play, The Royal Society of American Art, Incubator gallery, Techne Art Center, Gallery Tutu, and Survey Survey curatorial project. His work has been featured in WAPOZI magazine and ran the curatorial Johnny Utah project from 2021 until 2023. by @kev__oh

I had extra room in my new backpack so I carried my old DSLR and a wide angle lens for the first time in years. I forgot how much I enjoyed the experience of looking in that way.

It was also the best backpacking experience of my life by @kev__oh

Another pairing from our latest show ‘Art is Crucial!

These two works @kellyannmonaghanart and @kev__oh are both landscape paintings, however the artists take very different approaches to the subject matter. Both artists share an interest in light & space. Monaghan utilizes a thicker application of paint and renders the luminous presence of the lightning bugs in a mixture of light green applied as the final touches. While O’Hara uses thin layers of primary colors to create a more moody environment with the brightness of the campfires shining through the thinnest layers of paint.

In 1984 I watched Dune and Stalker (Andrey Tarkovsky) movies. I had the feeling that somewhere i would have encountered a path through all this mystery called life.
I still do.

Kevin’s work is about the fabric of reality and the creation of meaning through stories and symbols. His work encompasses the processes of observation, photo reference, memory and imagination equally as these methodologies are inextricably intertwined in how we each compose our perception of reality. Although driven by intuition Kevin’s practice employs analytical rigor in pursuit of his ideas. Illusion and play are engaged as a way of probing the authenticity of experience in the shaping of visual realities. Like poetry or game making, Kevin deploys rules for interaction within the work. Viewers are invited to engage the compositional arrangements, joining Kevin on a quest in which the journey is more important than the destination.
