Some experiences stay with you. This one has continued to grow.

I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time at the @nature_utah Dugout Ranch and experience the landscape, history, and people that make it such a special place.

Tonight, I had the enormous honor of presenting my painting “Perennial” to Heidi Redd, whose life and stewardship of this extraordinary place inspired the work.

I’m so thankful to @modernwestfineart for creating this special opportunity and for the thoughtful ways they continue to support me and my work.

And grateful to @utahmoca for the residency that first gave me the opportunity to experience Dugout Ranch.

A special collaboration for the Mega Helper Mini show brought Kevin Perry’s Helper Sublime photography exhibition with Modern West into the gallery, translating the online exhibition into both MEGA and MINI form.

Perennial, 2026

I finished this painting the same day I learned the Babylon Fire was approaching the Dugout Ranch/Canyonlands Research Center, where I had just returned from the UMOCA artist residency. Now the fire has grown into the largest in the U.S., and I’m thinking even more about the people who inspired this painting and hoping for the safety of Heidi, Kristen, Matt, the animals, and everyone working to protect the ranch.

Before arriving at the residency, I had looked forward to experiencing the incredible landscape, but I was equally excited to learn about the history of the ranch and Heidi Redd’s decades of leadership. What surprised me was realizing there wasn’t just one remarkable woman carrying its legacy, but two. While Heidi has long been the public face of the ranch, Kristen Redd’s quiet leadership revealed another side of its story.

At one point, Kristen described how the two creeks that once flowed through the ranch had been perennial streams. Today, those creek beds are dry, and that conversation has taken on an even deeper meaning recently. The word perennial stayed with me. I kept thinking about perennial water, perennial challenges, and perennial hope - but what ultimately stayed with me most were the perennial women whose strength continues across generations. Today, that strength is being tested once again.

My heart is with the Redd family and with everyone working to protect this special place.

Helper Sublime is a photography series by multidisciplinary artist @kevinkperry that grew out of spending time in and appreciating the subtle, yet powerful details of Helper, Utah – old buildings, cars, quiet corners, the occasional odd discovery, and the surrounding landscape.
