Great chat with @jordan__kowalchuk of @bcbackcountry on the latest episode of FHP. Tons of insight on hunting Elk strategies in BC. Finding new areas. Tips on calling and set-ups. Wind, thermals and secrets to closing the final 50 yards.

Elk Hunt with a Bow vs Rifle....

It took a few days into October this year for everything to finally click. Hunting all of September I got onto 24 bulls, only two were legal, including this guy.

I hunted the high country and ended up in moose country🤷‍♂️ Iworked the river bottoms, and stuck to the usual tactics: north-facing slopes, benches, and endless glassing. Hunting high pressured, public land elk is challenging, I heard only five bugles the entire month.

In the end, it wasn’t a textbook setup or a perfect plan that made it happen. It came down to hunting an unusual spot, staying patient, and being in the right place at the right time. A distant cow calling to her calf gave me a direction. With some elevation I was able to glass up a group with a legal bull following. Good wind allowed me to get in and make, not a perfect shot, but deadly 52 yard shot🏹

The most important skill required for any successful Elk hunter is the ability to adapt.

🏹 The intimacy of bowhunting.

Kevin Toye: "You just don't get that intimacy you get when you're hunting something with a bow."

No 600-yard shots. No scope. Just you, the animal, and the discipline — tinkering, tuning, building arrows, shooting every day. It's a lifestyle, not a hobby.
