Who’s the dirty fella at the elegant party?

Eu sou ele 🙋🏻‍♂️

A quick little vid illustrating what the past two weeks have been like from my perspective… building lots of pots on seaside cliffs, in jungles, on beaches and in neighborhood Studios… usually with a bangin DJ and a crowd full of beautifully stylish and unbelievably sweet people.

Art in its living form, a looong way from home.

Wrapping up @terracotabr_ in Bahia Brazil and headed back to the states tomorrow.

Feeling full and optimistic as ever. Despite the apparent treachery of these times, people are so bountifully good and Art brings us together, in love. It’s actually pretty easy to be a part of the goodness.

What a blessing. 🇧🇷

More soon, hope you’re well

For the second year, Terracota brought art back into the spaces of Casa Baiana. 🎨🌿

A meaningful connection to the history of this property, where art and ceramics once had a special place through the work of Leila Salum.

With artists, ceramics, music, food and plenty of good company, Casa Baiana once again hosted Terracota's opening event, celebrating the creativity and culture of Trancoso.

Thank you to all the artists, partners, friends and everyone who joined us.

Here's to keeping this tradition alive! ❤️

One of my favorite things about traveling is trying to fit our maximal studio into a minimal suitcase…

My practice tends to be one of those stereotypical messy, shit-all-over type of environments that appears to be a colorful chaotic madness from outside the whirlwind, but from within…
Everything is in its right place.

While I look forward to every aspect of traveling as an artist, making these small works on paper or definitely a highlight of passing the time of hot tropical days.

fun to produce these in situ— like a snapshot or something.

These paintings exist somewhere in between the incomplete ideas that belong in a leather sketchbook, and the formal stretched span of canvas developed in the studio .

Kind of my non-traditional en plein air, if you will.

Anyhow, this painting found me atop an oceanview bluff in Bahia, surrounded by beautiful little forest creatures, including my friends Alex and Loro’s kitten … who’s playful tottering around completed a visible chain of command amongst local inhabitants.

(She inspired the cat as a final design element that was desperately needed to balance the composition, thanks Dorothy, lol.)

A noticeable potential for “food chain action”, with everyone present but peacefully coexisting for the time being— all spiraling into the calm, seeing eye of “the universe “.

A rustic and possibly underdeveloped concept built through paint process via the utilization of Brazil’s early evening warm hues and lavender twilight skies.

Nerdy, but I do like it.

When properly stowed for travel, these smaller paintings usually end up in museum quality shadowbox frames and available in the Gallery… So I’ll just say it;

Brand new and (will be) available— ping me with interest.

Oh, Bahia… how we’ve missed you.

Just about halfway through our brief artists residency here in Brazil for this year’s @terracotabr_ arts festival and I just realized that I have not been posting about the experience quite yet.

It has been amazingly full.

Humbled and honored to be involved.

Please expect a detailed debrief at some point in the near future, because we have a zillion people, artists, places and events to acknowledge, admire, recommend and share.

Suffice to say, Brazil is a favorite stop on the global itinerary… so many dear friends and an indescribably effortlessly chíc and warm culture.

We are still jammin down here… learning, teaching and making for another week .

Thanks for following along, we love this work.

Love and respect

Working with earth, water, air, fire, and space every day for many many years slowly revealed something to me— and then demonstrated it over and over again so that I could live within its proof of truly knowing beyond doubt that…

The entire universe is alive.

(It always was, I just didn’t realize before.)

Game changing observation, that.

Like many nerdy art history loving sculptor people, I went through a period of being thematically preoccupied with my own weirdo version of “the classical nude” for a good solid year or two. This was a while back…

It’s just such a fun way to work…absolutely timeless and acceptable but still a little cheeky and provocative.

Sooo many layers of our humanity can be expressed within this artistic vehicle… no wonder it’s such frequently visited theme.

My original artistic training was in figure painting… so the jump to sculpture was a natural extrapolation using my basic familiarity with “the figure” as a foundation, difficult but very fun.

This one is from right before the pandemic and was the last in a series of 5 or 6 similar artworks I made in that period— and no, they were not all female.

I made these with all wheel thrown and altered pots joined together and fit onto a steel armature, round about life size.

Not sure why I ever departed from the idea, but it’s been a few years now… maybe I’ll revisit one day :-)

This particular sculpture took up residence at my own estate a few years back… She has moved from various spaces in the garden, to the pool, next to the Jacuzzi, etc etc…

Every time she finds a new space there is an ensuing month-long jump scare scenario as we get acquainted with her presence from inside the house 😂

Anyhow…from the archives—

Pulled a few of these pots with this frangipani inspired motif from out the fire today.

I really love the way they’ve turned out— especially this one.

have started experimenting with underglaze crayons… And I’m so pleasantly surprised with the effect and result. there is some color burnout, of course… But the amount of detail retained is pretty satisfying.

Wondering, do any of you pottery heads out there have experience with making under glaze crayons?

🖍️🖍️🖍️🖍️

If so, let’s connect.

I would love to hear about your process, any tricks or tips you might have.

this is a fairly compelling development in the studio for me. I’m all thirsty for it and stuff…good feeling.

Everyone loves the little before and after/ how it was made type of thing we got here.

That’s my business, connecting the dots.

Dirt poet in full effect on this one; splashy color scribble party with plenty of poise inna modern assemblage .

Some new techniques and tools in the glaze process, I’m so glad it went to plan.

(I do like it. How about you?)

Brand new and available. Ping me for details.
