Je t’aime à la folie, Le Caire

A love letter to a city I could never fully understand, and could never stop looking at.

I’ve spent my whole life surrounded by Cairo, yet somehow it still feels like something I’m trying to remember. There’s a strange feeling that comes with knowing a place so deeply when the streets start carrying memories you can’t separate from yourself when a certain light, a sound, or a passing face can take you somewhere you didn’t know you were still holding onto.

I wanted to capture that feeling.

Not Cairo as it exists on maps, but Cairo as it exists inside me. The one made of memories, sensations, fragments, and things I can’t really put into words. A city that can feel overwhelming and comforting, familiar and foreign, beautiful and unbearable and sometimes all at once.

This is my mythology. This is my Cairo.

‘Subtitles From A Movie That Doesn’t Exist’

Ten unique screenplay books.
Ten original stories.
One copy of each.
Each book is a different film.
Each story exists once.
Once collected, it belongs to one person.

A series of ten unique screenplay books.
I wanted to make films that only exist inside someone else’s imagination.
So I removed everything except the subtitles.

Every screenplay exists as a single physical edition.

A film without images.
A screenplay without a movie.
A story completed by the reader.

‘Subtitles From A Movie That Doesn’t Exist’

Cinema has taught us to believe that images come first.
This film asks what happens when they don’t.
There are no actors
No camera
No soundtrack
No scenes to watch
Only subtitles from a film that has never existed.
As the words appear, every viewer directs a different version of the same movie. Faces, places, voices, colors, memories, none of them are on the screen, yet they exist somewhere between language and imagination.

Maybe the most personal film you’ll ever watch is the one you have to make yourself.

Exploring the Lesser-Known Aspects of Egyptian Painter Mahmoud Saïd’s Career, 60 Years After His Passing.

His evocative portrayal of women. Marking the 60th anniversary of his death, an exhibition titled ‘In the Company of Mahmoud Said ‘is on view until October 15, inviting visitors to rediscover pieces by the artist whose canon continues to spark interest among public institutions and private collectors. Some of his best work from the first half of the 20th focused mainly on women, starting with the westernized elite, many of whom were his relatives, seeking to translate how the taste of upper-class Egyptian women for Parisian fashion and coquetry demonstrated a superior social status. Understanding these contrasts within the Egyptian society, Said also included ordinary women in the body of his work to acknowledge their existence and examine the tensions in a hierarchized society and his own place within it.
