“Overachieving, I really come from the bottom.”

📸: @terezahllc

My name is Khalil J. Ferguson, I am graduate of the Class of 2025 from McGeorge School of Law. I arrived in Sacramento in 2012 where I studied Economics and International Relations. In college, I tailored my studies, and the analytical frameworks learned in my studies, to the surrounding community, namely the Oak Park and Del Paso Heights neighborhoods. Specifically, I identified socioeconomic issues plaguing Black residents in these neighborhoods and sought ways to remedy them. Through my analyses I concluded that the foundational issues underlying the negative outcomes emanated from unfavorable and historic economic policies that reinforced systems that make up the cycle of poverty.

My research also brought me to the intersection of law and economics. Here, I learned that War on Drugs and mass incarceration left community members with criminal records that precluded them from obtaining gainful employment despite them having completed their sentences. Because job opportunities for residents of these neighborhoods are not available due to them having a criminal record, their income is suppressed.

To remedy this, I started an expungement clinic in 2020 that has been operating in Oak Park to date. To date, @the_uca has cleared over 300 criminal convictions for community members in Sacramento, Bakersfield, Antioch, and Los Angeles. It has been an honor to serve these communities over the course of my law school career. taken in Oak Park, Sacramento, California by @khaliljferguson

Reflecting on a meaningful afternoon at Underground Books in Oak Park.

Thank you to the Underground Books team for hosting the launch of Subservience. Oak Park has long been a home for Black literature and Black political thought in Sacramento, and I am grateful to have shared this work in that space.

To everyone who attended, thank you for your presence and for the thoughtful questions you brought to the discussion. We examined the political and economic decisions that produced a global Black underclass, and the conversation was as rigorous as it was generous. That kind of engagement is exactly what this book was written to invite.

Subservience: Political and Economic Decisions that Created a Global Black Underclass is available at KhalilJFerguson.com and for purchase at Underground Books.

I look forward to continuing this conversation. taken in Oak Park, Sacramento, California by @khaliljferguson

Grateful and humbled to be named to the Sacramento Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2026.

Each year, the Sacramento Business Journal recognizes 40 professionals under the age of 40 who are driving innovation, leadership, and change throughout the Sacramento region. To be counted among them is an honor I don’t take for granted.

It means even more to share this recognition alongside friends and colleagues who are equally committed to uplifting our community. Sacramento is in good hands.

A special thank you to the United CORE Alliance Board of Directors, my team, and everyone who has believed in and supported this work. taken in Sacramento, California by @khaliljferguson

Yesterday, I had the honor of serving as the Distinguished Keynote Speaker for the Sacramento State Cooper-Woodson College Enhancement Program’s Pan African Graduation Celebration, marking the program’s 40th anniversary. 🎓✊🏾

Dr. Carter G. Woodson was born to formerly enslaved parents who lived in poverty and could not read or write. Yet his hunger to learn led him to teach himself, finish high school in two years, and ultimately become only the second Black American to earn a PhD from Harvard. He spent his life documenting and defending Black history because he understood that a people disconnected from their history lose the inspiration to carry it forward. The graduates of 2025 and 2026 carry that same spirit, and they now leave with degrees and a responsibility to their communities that mirrors exactly what Dr. Woodson modeled.

A huge thank you to the Cooper-Woodson College Enhancement Program for the recognition and this beautiful award. It means more than words can express. Still, we rise. 🌍📚 taken in California State University, Sacramento by @khaliljferguson

Honored to serve as the keynote speaker for the Black Graduation Celebration at University of the Pacific. My address, “Rooted in Legacy, Rising in Purpose,” reflected on the life and legacy of Dr. Anna J. Cooper, who was born enslaved, pursued education after emancipation, and later became the fourth Black woman in the United States to earn a PhD at the age of 65. Her story remains a powerful testament to resilience, scholarship, and the transformative power of education.

I challenged the graduates to recognize that they now carry both the privilege and responsibility of building pathways for the next generation. Like the scholars and advocates who came before us, our education must be used in service of community, progress, and purpose. Congratulations again to the Class of 2026. Continue rising with intention, honoring the legacy you stand upon while shaping the future ahead. taken in University of the Pacific by @khaliljferguson
