2. “What an interesting question! A painting I’d have to say because of all the amazing view points along the course. Plenty of times you just stop running to pause and take it in”-Renee Janssen 3. “Oh my, if I were to compare Backcountry Rise to an artistic style I would say it would be in the abstract expressionist, Jackson Pollock vein. It’s something that may not make sense at first glance until you’re there really looking at it with honest eyes. You look at it, study it, experience it, take a step back from it, then embrace it…that’s where the beauty and magic is.” -Aaron Long. 4. “Oh definitely a painting. With sweeping ocean and coastal views, vast wilderness areas, and a summit to the highest peak in the Santa Monica mountains only a painting could capture its pure beauty!” -Kierra Henninger
5. “Um, that’s a tough one. I’d say a painting because the grandeur of seeing Lake Tahoe from 3,000 ft above it.”-George Ruiz 6. “ This is a great question, and a tricky one. Way Down We Go by KALEO feels especially fitting for the grand Traverse. It is powerful, brooding, and relentless-much like the long days and countless miles racers commit to long before they ever reach the start line, and the sustained effort required throughout the event itself. The song’s shifting intensity, mirrors the inevitable, dark moments along the course, when forward progress becomes more about resolve than speed. Its lyrics speak to reckoning with consequences and confronting personal challenges, themes that resonate deeply within the Grand Traverse community. Many racers choose this event to mark significant moments in their lives-another year of sobriety, a return to strength after childbirth, a milestone birthday, or simply the need to move through a difficult chapter. In that way, the song captures, not just the physical demands of the race, but the personal meaning, each participant carries with them across the mountains.” -Linsey Bachover taken in United States by @khraces

What Makes Sean O’Brien So Relentlessly Hard?

Mind-Boggling Elevation Gain: Don’t let the coastal location fool you! The marquee 100K course packs over 14,000 feet of vertical climbing (and equal quad-crushing descent). You are constantly grinding up relentless fire roads and steep single-track terrain.

Brutal “Rollercoaster” Terrain: There are virtually no flat sections to catch your rhythm. The course demands endless transitions between steep, power-hiking uphills and technical, speed-punishing downhills that push your cardiovascular system and leg muscles to their absolute limits.

Unpredictable Microclimates: Running in early February means experiencing the wild versatility of Malibu weather. You might start in freezing mountain fog at dawn, hit scorching sun exposure along exposed chaparral ridges by midday, and brave howling ocean winds on the peaks!

The combination of relentless elevation profile, exposed sun, and non-stop climbing makes it a premier training ground and Western States Qualifier. Achieving a finish here isn’t just a race checkmark—it is a true badge of honor!

But here’s what makes this run so special: Drop-Dead Gorgeous Pacific Ocean Views: Every time your legs feel like lead, you break out onto a ridge and get hit with sweeping, high-altitude panoramas of the deep blue Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. It’s pure natural motivation that takes your breath away!

We can’t wait to see you all at the start line on Jan 30th, 2027!

Join the LA running community on Tuesday, September 1 as we celebrate the life and grieve the loss of Michael Flores. Mikey was out for his routine run when he was fatally hit by a drunk driver in a speeding car. Mikey would have wanted us to keep running and continue striving to be better each day. Meet at the northwest corner of Atlantic/Firestone at 7pm, right before sunset. by @khraces
