FAT GERBIL GALLERY PRESENTS: KYTHE

A group exhibition.

To kythe: an old Scots word, kin to “kith,” meaning to show, to reveal, to make known — to let what’s hidden come into view.

This September, nine artists take that word as provocation rather than title. Roddy Macneill, David Iain Brown, Kimberley Bright, Mark Purves, Liam Richardson, Tatjana Fraser, David Rae, Kidd Murray and Lorna Sinclair each bring a body of entirely new work, made specifically for this exhibition and shown for the first time. What’s on the walls is what’s newly surfaced: instinct made visible, private language turned outward.

Expect the show to resemble its makers as much as it reveals them.

Every piece has been made on matching art kits — oak frames and cotton canvas — supplied by Plan, giving nine very different practices a shared starting point from which to diverge.

Alongside the exhibition, handmade ceramics by Pascal Nichols will be available. His visceral, idiosyncratic work is process-driven and draws inspiration from historical artefacts, punk and folk art, bringing another tactile element to the space.

Kidd Murray, a visual artist from Glasgow, graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2017 with an Honours degree in Painting and Printmaking.

Their work explores the human experience, with each painting serving as a window into a journey of self-discovery and growth.

Through the transformative symbolism of butterflies and caterpillars, Murray challenges traditional notions of
beauty and questions the male gaze.

Hair features heavily in Murray’s latest painting series; a nod to the traditional work of the old masters. Hair is deeply tied to identity and femininity, and in this series it acts as a reminder of the inevitable simultaneous relationship between growth and letting go.

Murray’s anthropomorphic representations explore the delicate balance between vulnerability, strength, and masculine and feminine energies.

Most recent WIP in the studio 🦋 Things have been changing recently; more hours/promotion at work (in social care), so less time in the studio but doing my best to build a new routine. I feel so lucky that I love my job… it’s a massive part of who I am, and working in care has changed my life. Looking forward to getting into the studio more and putting less pressure on myself. Been experimenting a lot with this new piece; the colours change every time I visit it. Really enjoying the process though… I am having fun and not being scared to try new techniques or change things completely. This painting is about identity and the concept of the “two selves”. A hard gaze— a nod to the male gaze? Or the watchful eye of societal pressures? Anyway, just a wee check-in as I know I’ve been quiet on here. New work coming soon 🦋 taken in Glasgow, United Kingdom by @kidd.murray
