๐Ÿค— Want to get kids super excited? Set up a Scholastic Book Fair at school!

My school hasnโ€™t held a book fair in many years, so for many students this was a new experience! So many amazing books to add to their wishlists, along with such cute journals, posters, eraser sets and pens! My class had a blast filling in their wishlists and visiting the book fair with their parents on Open House night.

Today I found out that one of my families bought me a book off my wishlist. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ

Has your school had a book fair recently?

๐Ÿšช I was so happy to receive this beautiful book as part of #tandemreadalong and had loads of fun exploring my town to find some interesting doors. One of them is actually the door to a historic coach house that was constructed over 120 years ago!

A DOOR IS TO OPEN is a delightful book about all types of doors and entryways. Not only what they look like, but also where they lead and what feelings they evoke and their purposes - some real and some imaginary.

With truly lovely illustrations, including a stunning foldout page, thereโ€™s so much to discover when you open up this book to explore all the amazing possibilities that doors hold!

Which door has been your favourite to open?

Thank you to @tundrabooks @indiebookstoresca @penguinrandomca and @tandemcollectiveglobal

๐Ÿ˜‚ The minute I showed my students this book cover, the giggles started! It honestly took a while before I could even start to read!

The Bear Fairy had us laughing all the way through and it was such a fun book to share with my class, who have definitely learned that funny books are my favourite!

Whatโ€™s your new favourite funny book?

๐ŸŒป Such a perfectly wonderful day at Telling Tales yesterday! I brought my 9-year old along for our second year and it was so much fun!

We got to listen to Jack Wong read his new book and draw along as we learned how to draw koi fish and race cars (I know!). Passing by the Read Together Tent, we stopped as Zenia Wadhwani read Fly in the Chai (so fun!) before moving onto Arley Nopra! We heard a chapter from Dawn on the Coast and learned to draw the whole BSC crew! We also had to pop over to the autograph tent for Alina Tysoe to sign all our Puptective books! Our final stop was a quick hello to Nadine Presley after she read The City of Jasmine!

There were so many other read alouds I wanted to get to and authors I wanted to meet, but hoping for many of them to return next year!

Thanks to Telling Tales, the Royal Botanical Gardens, the authors & illustrators, along with the many volunteers who made the day completely fabulous!

๐Ÿงก Today is commonly referred to as Orange Shirt Day in Canada. It was created based on the story of Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away when she went to a residential school at age 6. Itโ€™s a day we honour the survivors of residential schools and think about those who never returned home.

With the younger students, I generally focus on Orange Shirt Day. This year, I did touch on Truth and Reconciliation with my grade 2s. I read lots of books and my class had a great discussion about how every child should feel at school, which lead to my students creating their feathers. I introduced the dream catchers this year as a new activity and weโ€™ll continue to work on them before hanging them in the classroom.

This year our whole school met outside by the river for an assembly, recognizing that we are on borrowed land and the work that must be done through truth and reconciliation. We need to remember this not only on September 30th, but every day.

Thank you to for the dream catcher activity @indigenousteacher
I donโ€™t know where the feather activity came from - please let me know if you do!

The books featured are excellent for Orange Shirt Day and every day.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Every year, around this time, we remember a true Canadian hero - Terry Fox.

At only 21-years of age, Terry set off with one โ€˜goodโ€™ leg and one artificial leg, determined to run across Canada in the Marathon of Hope. His goal was to raise one dollar for every Canadian for cancer research, in the hopes of finding a cure. Sadly, Terry was unable to complete his marathon. But every year, schools and communities run, walk, and wheel to continue what Terry started.

Leading up to todayโ€™s walk, I read my class several books and they completed a few activities. The students always enjoy learning about Terry Fox and have so many questions. When the time comes to walk, they take it very seriously and show great determination, just like Terry. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ด Happy #internationaldotday โšซ๏ธ

My grade two class celebrated Dot Day on the 15th with lots of fun and creativity! It started off by reading The Dot and talking about why Peter Reynolds wrote the book and what he wanted to share with us, the reader.

Afterwards, the students used their fantastic imaginations to compete two pieces of art. The first is from @cassie_stephenz . The students were given a dot sticker and used it to inspire their drawing. Look how cute they are! ๐Ÿฅน

The second is from First Downs & First Sounds on TPT. Before the students began this Dot Day Challenge, we brainstormed things that are round (or round-ish) and shared lots of ideas for the dots. I love the way they turned out! Super creative!

How did you celebrate Dot Day this year?

๐Ÿ“š My latest library holds pickup was full of fabulous books that Iโ€™ve been itching to read! It seemed like not much was coming in, but then when I stopped by my library this week, there was nearly a whole shelf of books waiting for me! What a joyful feeling!

Iโ€™m sharing eight books here that Iโ€™m looking forward to reading. But not to worry, there will definitely be a Part Two to this post with more picture books from my amazing library!

For now, here are a few Iโ€™ll be enjoying during a relaxing weekend after a very busy first full week of teaching.

๐ŸŽ And just like that the first week of school is over!

We started after Labour Day, so it was just four days, but, in my grade 2 class, we sure did a lot of read alouds in those four days! My students seemed to catch on quickly that I love to read to them and some started asking if it was time for a story!

Each book I read had a purpose. Some were to welcome them, some to make them laugh, others were meant to start off a discussion, and a few lead to an activity. Also, there were a few newer books mixed in with some of my favourites!

Check out what I read this week and let me know if we read any of the same books? Whatโ€™s your favourite back to school book?
