Phantom Limb

*Phantom Limb* is a mixed-media installation exploring migration, memory, and resilience through sculpture, collage, sound, moving image, and participation. Borrowing its title from the neurological phenomenon in which an absent limb continues to be physically felt, the work approaches exile as a sensory condition where attachment to place, language, and people persists despite distance.

Rooted in my experience of migration and shaped by conversations with members of the Iranian diaspora, the installation transforms everyday materials into symbolic substitutions: flower bouquets become explosions, papaya seeds resemble bullets, wood knots become wounds, and familiar domestic objects begin to carry memories of conflict and home.

Rather than asking viewers to witness war, Phantom Limb invites them to experience the contradictions of living alongside it—where grief and joy, absence and belonging, fear and celebration coexist. The installation welcomes different ways of engaging through listening, looking, touching, drawing, and simply taking time to be present, allowing each visitor to navigate the work through their own senses and memories.

I made a playground for my fears.
I told everyone the story.
The story of a home far away full of resilience and love.
They listened to the sounds of sorrow and took a moment to think.
They drew an explosion full of life underneath.
I told them the story of a home we all carry.
Where fury and joy live together in peace.
Where we all belonged to and now it's a phantom limb!

هیچ‌کس هیچ‌وقت به من یاد نداد چطور برقصم ولی بابام خیلی خوب می‌رقصه.
من یاد گرفتم با جریان زندگی تکون بخورم. حتی اگه صدای کسی در نمیاد، به صدای پرنده‌ها و جیغ‌های تختم گوش کنم.

هیچ‌کس هیچ‌وقت به من یاد نداد چطور گریه کنم ولی میدونم گریه لازمه.
من یاد گرفتم احساساتم رو رنگ و کلمه و شکل و حرف کنم. یه وقت‌هایی هم دادم در میاد. تازگی خیلی گریه می‌کنم.

مامانم وقتی ۶ سالم بود بهم یاد داد زندگی آدما مثل درخته. درختا پاییز دارن. برگاشون میریزه و باید برگاشون بریزه تا جوونه‌های جدید در بیان. من یاد گرفتم از دست دادن چه شکلیه.
.
وقتی ۴ سالم بود فهمیدم یه آدمایی میرن ولی برمیگردن. فقط میرن چون یه جا دیگه زندگی می‌کنن.
مثل عمه‌م، خاله‌م، پسرعمه‌م، بابابهزاد و خیلیای دیگه.
یاد گرفتم دل نبندم.
.
هیچ‌وقت هیچ‌کس یادم نداد چطور ایران رو دوست داشته باشم ولی دیدم مامانم برعکس خواهر برادرش موند و تلاش کرد.
من همیشه ایران رو دوست داشتم. عاشق جاده‌هاش بودم. امن بود برام. یعنی هنوزم هست. همیشه میمونه. من همیشه ایران رو دوست دارم.
.
اما کسی هرگز بهم یاد نداد چطور در جنگ و خون زنده بمونم.
حالا فقط دارم تماشا می‌کنم، می‌ترسم، دنبال آغوش نوید می‌گردم و چایی لاهیجان رو مینوشم تا دلم گرم باشه تا خورشیدم روشن بمونه و از پشت دماوند بیاد بیرون، تا نترسه طلوع کنه.
تا برقصه، گریه کنه، بره و بیاد، بمونه و آزاد باشه.
.
من آزادی رو دیدم، یاد گرفتم و می‌دونم ایران باید آزاد باشه.
