Time to meet the artists for ‘The Warp and the Weft’’ ; an open call exhibition showcasing the work of Sussex based artists and makers. Meet Kiki Bond! Brighton based @kikibondart works across painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, with portraiture at the heart of much of her practice. Her work moves between people, places and ideas, drawing on symbolism, observation and personal experience to build individual narratives. Born and raised in Bucharest, Kiki’s work is influenced by both Romanian and British culture, while her background in metal sculpture continues to inform her approach to form and material. Rather than settling into one recognisable style, she allows the subject and medium to determine the direction of each body of work. ‘Where I begin’ Oil on canvas 40 x 30 cm ‘This painting was inspired by a photo of my mum and her sister, back in Romania in the 1950s. Ive been thinking of the warp and weft of my own being, being a Romanian national established in the UK for 20 years. So Ive decided to depict two versions of me, two dresses, two patterns, under the same sky, same hand held between us. The faces dissolve into blue where both identities begin, indistinct and unclaimed. But the legs are painted solid, grounded on the same red earth: proof I stand in both places now, not halfway between them. Warp is the thread you’re born with, invisible once the weaving starts. Weft is what you add, year by year, country by country. Neither makes cloth alone.’ Kiki Bond Artists and collectors PV 16th October by RSVP Show runs 17th October to 8th November, 2026 Bond St Gallery, Brighton, UK BN1 1RP ‘The days are made on a loom whereof the warp and woof are past and future time. They are majestically dressed, as if every god brought a thread to the skyey web.’ Ralph Waldo Emerson From ‘Works and Days’ by @kikibondart
The Warp & The Weft at Bond Street Gallery has a wonderful selection of beautiful and affordable work by local, Sussex-based artists. Discover works under £500 by Neil Pavey, Grace Wilmshurst, Georgina Beach, Julian Vilarrubi and Kiki Bond. Swipe left to view. Grace Wilmshurst Overground Oil on canvas 23 × 28 cm £300 Grace Wilmshurst’s paintings explore our relationship with the natural world and how we perceive animals. In Overground, a house holds still while a dog runs past, bringing together memory, place and movement. Wilmshurst connects this visible scene with the intricate world of fungus beneath the surface, suggesting an unseen structure that holds things in place. The painting was inspired by Wilding, the book about the Knepp estate, and was shortlisted for the 2025 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Neil Pavey Every thread we pull changes the design of things Oil and acrylic on paper 51 × 48 cm £425 Neil Pavey’s practice explores the connections that hold things together, and how small actions can change the bigger picture. In this work, found images, paint and other media create a layered dialogue. The title reflects his interest in the fabric of the world and the consequences of our actions, particularly for the environment and society. Pavey also considers the creative tension of knowing when to start and stop, and the possibility that art can make a difference. A little #acrylicink study today for My family and other animals series , utilising an old photo of me and my sister and a stuffed bear and goat, very common sight in all the tourists sites across Romania, in the communist era. We weren’t aloud to travel abroad so staycation was the only holiday available, and for some reason, it was very fashionable to get your kids posing with stuffed dead animals. I have loads of these photos with various dead animals in various resorts. This one is from Sovata and we were 6 years old… A little nod to my family dressing us twin sisters in the same clothes but different colours. #amintiridincopilarie #sovatabăi #oldphotography by @kikibondart

As surgery on my neck approaches again this Friday, same time as probably the most important moment in my career takes place, I can only hope and pray I will be let out in time to pop in and enjoy it, even under anaesthetic . The odds are against i know but in case I do, I’ll be somewhat extatic and confused on one side, and normal on the other. Don’t be afraid to approach me. Here’s hoping 🤞 by @kikibondart
“Shroud of me” Oil pastels imprint by @kikibondart
Studies for another painting based on a family photo, this time of me and my sister, out in a park in Romania picking flowers on a sunny summer afternoon. My parents used to dress us the same as we are twins, but in different colours, or different pattern, like these two lovely cotton embroidered and one was knitted , i remember them very well. This is one idea I had for a submission to Shelter, for the Sussex contemporary open call is revolving around how do we protect our kids from themselves and wanting to grow up too fast. I know this too well as I have a 12 yr old going on 16. One approach to this idea is the return to innocence and wanting to shelter that fragile and beautiful bloom for a bit longer.. anyway, one idea that is… by @kikibondart
So proud of this little painting to be shortlisted for @bondstreetgallery 's The Warp and the Weft. Its a very personal one as it cant get more personal than yourself....its called "Where I begin" and this is the concept from where it was born... This painting was inspired by a photo of my mum and her sister, back in Romania in the 1950s. Warp is the thread you're born with, invisible once the weaving starts. Weft is what you add, year by year, country by country. Neither makes cloth alone. As I change direction completely in my art practice and dig a bit deeper in myself this has come at the perfect time to validate this new terrifying path Ive embarked on. They say its not the destination but the journey so here's one stop, onto the next now. Oil on canvas 24 x 30 cm Available for sale through Bond Street Gallery. #bondstreetgallery #thewarpandtheweft #newartpath #contemporaryartist #brightonartists #kikibondart by @kikibondart
