I am still in utter shock, joy and disbelief that I was able to move and groove in this ! Growing up, I rarely saw people who looked like me in spaces like these. Never in a million years would I have thought I could participate in something like this. I don’t care what some might say- representation matters. Especially in these times. Proud to represent as an Asian American Pacific Islander female identifying dance artist! MFA slayy

When I moved to this country I planned to stay for one year, go for a MA, and leave. That didn’t happen lol.

I knew one friend in London @clara.stanford.77 , and came late from my delayed visa. Took two months to move into a flat, didn’t have WiFi for over a year, and did not realize that an eight hour time difference was going to shift my life the way it did (among other things). The chaos was still trumped by what I found.

Community is everything. It is vital for joy, growth, and identity. I am so lucky to have had the privilege of graduating next to friends who got me through these past two years. In so many ways their work, passion, and presence pushed me to show up- and give myself grace when it was necessary.

I can’t thank my family and friends who supported me through it all enough- even from thousands of miles away. And visits meant the world.

Mahalo nui to Kumu Hula Lehua Bray @lehuabray and Kahu Rosie Khim for taking the time to share through their lenses. Their generosity allowed me to create a documentary project on Hula and Hawaiian Culture. To bring genuine voices of lived experience into academia is a privilege I do not take lightly. Shoutout to the Ariyoshi family @marisariyoshi for connecting us.

I am so thankful for all my friends and colleagues who helped me in my dissertation, and gave their artistry, time, and guidance- and helped me create dance films in the bay, LA, and London. There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude. Without you all- there would be nothing to show, and no research made. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

These last two years didn’t meet expectations and through the tumultuous parts- gave me the space to discover more creativity and hone in on projects that were greater than me.
