The car floor is one of the loudest areas. Due to its large surface area and constant contact with other car components, it becomes a transmitter of airborne and vibrational noises. Transmission noises from the gearbox, road noise from intense driving, tire sound, gravel and rock impacts — all are transmitted into the car cabin through the floor. Hello, everyone. We're back again to address the most pressing questions and concerns of our clients and potential buyers.
One of the frequently asked questions is whether to do sound deadening or not, and it's often tied to the belief that a car will rust faster afterward. Let's take a closer look at this issue.
Why might a car rust? Basic chemistry knowledge presents the following scenarios
Moisture ingress and conducive conditions for corrosion, even on painted metal.
Existing corrosion spots that will gradually expand.
Damage to the protective layer of metal and access to air and possibly moisture.
All of these scenarios can occur both before sound deadening installation and as a result of improper installation.
What can be done to prevent a car from rusting after sound deadening? Is it true that sound deadening can protect the body and extend its service life? Let's delve into it!
When you dismantle the interior and remove the trim from the elements, you'll immediately see if there are any corrosion-prone areas.
Rule 1: If you notice areas of corrosion starting, you shouldn't cover them with materials. You need to first clean them up (possibly weld if necessary) and treat them with a special compound that stops corrosion. Then, at a minimum, you need to prime the area before sound deadening.
If the body is in good condition and you're going to do sound deadening:
Rule 2: If you've properly prepared the surface (degreased it) and carefully rolled the material with a roller (without air bubbles), you won't have a corrosion process – because you've cut off oxygen (air) access to the metal. Corrosion doesn't occur without oxygen!
Bonus Rule: Even if you accidentally miss some metal damage and just degrease it and apply a vibration-damping material (like Kilmat), BUT the main thing is that you've rolled it on properly – then you've at least significantly slowed down the potential corrosion process (after all, you've sealed off air and moisture from that area), thus extending the body's service life by several years.
