OMGomgomgomg… I LYCHEE YOU has been shortlisted for the 26th Patrick White Playwrights Award @sydneytheatreco !

I’m honestly still in disbelief. This is the greatest honour, and I’m deeply grateful to the judges at STC for their generous comments:

“Blending playful theatrical invention with emotional acuity, I LYCHEE YOU uses magical transformation and sharply observed dialogue to explore intergenerational family life. Humour and lyricism sit alongside moments of genuine tenderness, with the mother–daughter relationship rendered in rich, lived‑in detail. Themes of cultural identity, translation and care emerge with specificity and warmth, resulting in a piece that feels both distinctive and deeply resonant.”

This is the first play I’ve ever written, and anyone who knows me knows this little pip of an idea didn’t appear out of nowhere. It grew because people were kind enough to give me a chance.

Back in 2023, the incredible director duo at Q Theatre, Shy Magsalin and Rowan Bates, commissioned me purely based on the pitch. They took a chance on me, and I’ve carried their faith with me ever since.

After three drafts of learning how to write a play while writing a play, in 2025 the two powerhouses Lucy Clements and Emma Wright who run the Old Fitz invited I Lychee You to be part of their New Works Festival staged readings. With generous support from Q Theatre, we gathered the most amazing team — Cindy Giang, Aileen Huynh, Gabrielle Chan, and Jonathan Chan, directed by the wonderful Rebecca Mathews — and brought the story to life in a booked‑out show.

Then late last year, I met up with Jonathan Ware and Jules Orcullo from STC who encouraged me to apply for this award. I did. And now… here we are.

And absolutely none of it would have been possible without my incredible family and friends, who make it possible for me to pursue writing. A special thank you to Dom Mercer, who was there at the beginning and offered guidance when I had no idea what I was doing.

A special shout‑out to my two best friends:
My husband Daniel, and my little sister Vivian — who I love more than anything.

I honestly can’t explain how grateful I am to every single person who helped bring 🍓I Lychee You🍓 to life, from the cast who poured their hearts into it, to everyone who came to watch, and to those cheering from afar🌟

None of this magic would’ve been possible without the immense support from @secret_rowan, @are_you_shy_, @qtheatre_ and @oldfitztheatre. You believed in this squishy little fruit play when it was just a pip of an idea, and helped it blossom into something real, something shared.

Thank you for giving it a stage, a heartbeat, and a home❤️

So, I'm doing a thing...

I'll be performing my new poem, “Tran Sends Ants” at the Sydney Opera House on Sept. 6th! 💫

Visual-Music Energies Concert is a dynamic multi-artform event where musicians bring compositions to life and improvise in real time, responding intuitively to visual art, short films, and poetry.

My poem explores the ephemeral nature of childhood, diasporic identity, and the enduring echoes of generational trauma rooted in the Vietnam War, drawing urgent parallels to the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

Though it may not be much, I will be donating my full commission from this performance to Palestine Red Cresent Society. It’s a gesture of love, grief, and resistance and a reminder that our stories, no matter how distant they may seem, are deeply intertwined.

Pretty sure tickets are free, no RSVP needed, just rock up. Link's in my bio if you wanna peek at the program and see what magic's brewing!

~ I Lychee You ~ is a play that I've been working on since last year and it's finally at the table reading stage! ✨️ I honestly can't believe it!

I wouldn't have made it this far if it wasn't for Shy Magsali @shy.magsalin and Rowan Bate, Creative Directors at Q Theatre @qtheatre_ for believing in me and the story ❤️

I Lychee You is a story about a mother and daughter. In many ways it is like a lot of stories about mothers and daughters, except in this one, the daughter is inexplicably transformed into a lychee.

Imagine Pixar’s Bao meets Freaky Friday!

Q Theatre is seeking performers for a closed table reading as part of the play’s development and not a public presentation.

There are four roles available.

Loretta, Female 18. Of Vietnamese background.
Mẹ, Female late 30s–50s. Of Vietnamese background.
Bà Ngoại, Female late 50s–70s. Of Vietnamese background.
Chu Hoai, Male late 30s–50s. Of Vietnamese background.

Here's a link to more info about how to apply ❣️

So, I guess I'm a poet now?!? 😳

I was highly commended by the Bruce Dawe National Poetry Prize - joint second! My 14 year old self would never have believed this, and neither does the 29 year old version!

Swipe to read my poem titled, Amygdala hijack.

Thank you to the University of Southern Queensland @unisqaus , the judging panel, and my family and friends! ✨️ by @kimeleonphilms
