The harp world has lost another one of its great teachers. French harpist Elizabeth Fontan Binoche has died at age 100.

One of the last students of Marcel Tournier, Fontan-Binoche began studying with him at age 6 at the Paris Conservatoire and spent her life carrying that French tradition forward. She won fourth prize at the very first International Harp Contest in Israel in 1959, served as principal harp of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, and taught generations of harpists at the conservatories of Boulogne, Lyon, Nice, and Antibes. Her students include Marie-Pierre Langlamet and Isabelle Perrin. She kept performing well into her 80s, giving a recital in Italy at 87.

She graced the cover of our January-February 2008 issue after editor Alison Reese sat down with her nearly 20 years ago in Chicago. In 2016, founder Kimberly Rowe visited her at her home in the south of France along with Isabelle Perrin.

Midcoast friends: I am delighted to let you know that I am joining the teaching roster at @centerpilatesme along with @hannadehoff! I’ll be teaching a beginner/intermediate mat Pilates class on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. beginning March 21.

In case you are wondering:

—Is it really for beginners? Yes! You can sign up even if you’ve never done Pilates before. I promise I will be nice to you.
