The harp world has lost another one of its great teachers. French harpist Elizabeth Fontan Binoche has died at age 100.

One of the last students of Marcel Tournier, Fontan-Binoche began studying with him at age 6 at the Paris Conservatoire and spent her life carrying that French tradition forward. She won fourth prize at the very first International Harp Contest in Israel in 1959, served as principal harp of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, and taught generations of harpists at the conservatories of Boulogne, Lyon, Nice, and Antibes. Her students include Marie-Pierre Langlamet and Isabelle Perrin. She kept performing well into her 80s, giving a recital in Italy at 87.

She graced the cover of our January-February 2008 issue after editor Alison Reese sat down with her nearly 20 years ago in Chicago. In 2016, founder Kimberly Rowe visited her at her home in the south of France along with Isabelle Perrin.

Subscribers can download the January-February 2008 issue and read the full interview through the link in our bio.

Founded in 1993 by Kimberly Rowe @kimharp and Hugh Brock @hewbrocca , @harpcolumn has become a true institution ,one far more solid than this magnificent house of cards!

Entirely devoted to the worldwide harp community, Kim and Hugh, together with Alison @reeseharp , who joined them a little later, have created something that feels very much like a family: warm, dynamic, inspiring, and extraordinarily generous in everything they do for the harp world.

Over the years, I have been very fortunate to share many wonderful moments with them, and I am truly happy to celebrate this 200th issue of Harp Column by their side.

And I already know there will be many more good times, conversations, laughter, and shared adventures ahead ,on one side of the Atlantic or the other.

Congratulations on 200 issues, and thank you for everything you bring to our harp community!

Happy 200th issue to @harpcolumn connecting our harp community across borders, genres and time.

🌷I cherish this interview published in 2021 that allowed me to share the beginnings of @theturkishharp with my colleagues around the world, adding excitement to inspiration.

Thank you @kimharp and @reeseharp for your contribution and wishing you all the best for the times ahead.

Celebrating @harpcolumn’s 200th magazine edition! 👏

Just one year ago, I was the cover girl for the Sept/Oct issue and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this vibrant harp community.

From Sounding Board features, Q&A’s, and highlights, to an original Tear Out tune, @reeseharp and @kimharp have been so supportive of me and countless other harpists since 1993.
