These images are what I imagined when I imagined the concept of AI imagining images for these empty books.

That is to say, the pages layer blankness upon blankness. However, the blur of the photographs suggests that there was once something pictured to be blurred. Canada, and its figurative removal—or the subject’s, more likely.

Last days to see ‘Calibbration’ @dieplekgallery.

Come join us tomorrow, Saturday October 3 at 11 am for a conversation between myself and the inimitable @the_unreal_jan_tumlir

Most of the pictures in this imagined guts I worked on for weeks. However with these pages, no additional referents were provided other than the book title to generate them. They emerged from the void with neither image nor text to guide their passage out. taken in West Hollywood, California by @kimschoen_studio

Calibbration — the extra b is intentional. It’s borrowed from an AI image-to-text error, and it sets the tone for Kim Schoen’s new body of work: two interlocking series in video, photography, and text that look at how objects and language try to persuade us.

On view at Die Plek @dieplekgallery through October 3. By appointment.

All works by: KIM SCHOEN @therealkimschoen @kimschoen_studio

DIE PLEK is pleased to announce the opening of ‘Calibbration’, a new body of work by LA based artist Kim Schoen. The exhibition, which takes its name from an image-to-text artifact, presents two interlocking series. The first is a photographic series of still lives with book blanks as the subjects. The second part consists of press proofs printed in Liquid Electrophotography (LED) where Schoen fed the invented book blanks titles into an AI-generating system, asking it to picture what these non-existent books might contain. Opening Reception Saturday 13 June - 5:00 - 8:00pm. Brunch preview Sunday 14 June - 11:00 - 1:00pm. (c) Kim Schoen, Pamplemousse, 2022. taken in West Hollywood, California by @kimschoen_studio

Oracles is a video work by Kim Schoen that features roses encased in plastic globes—real flowers spray painted with neon colored paint, and hovering in water—‘forever flowers.’ The video shows us the debris that has been accumulating in the orbs over the years Schoen has held on to them; biological life beginning to bloom again in the form of algae.

Schoen collaborated with OSO (One Sound Object) to have artists make sound works: ‘oracular pronouncements’ based off of three Delphic Maxims that having to do with time and aging (#11: Think as a mortal; #11: Accept old age; #147: On reaching the end, be without sorrow.”)

On Saturday February 14, from 11:30 am —1 pm, there will be live performances of these sound works. Come join us for the closing of “In Bloom”, curated by James Fishburne, at The Forest Lawn Museum.

Artists performing: Patrick Behnke, Claire de Dobay Rifelj, Brendan Getz, Marcus Herse, Nicki Chen, and Pauline Lay.

We look forward to seeing you there~! taken in Forest Lawn Museum by @kimschoen_studio

Thank you @viola.wav and @brendan_getz for the incredible sound recordings Think As a Mortal Φρονει θνητα in the Gothic Corridor.

We’re playing with time.
The very thing that holds us in motion
Will you play it with me?
A little tune to leave myself with you

As we race across the days together, I wonder what pieces of me you will carry you
Maybe bits of my hopes, little sayings, the exact way I made those cookies
They take on a new shape with you

-Nicki Chen

Save the date for more……

December 9 @pbehnkaa and Claire de Dobay Rifelj sound recordings for Accept Old Age Γηρας προσδεχου at the Sybil in the Museum Foyer.

January 9 @paulinelay and @hersemarcus sound recordings for On Reaching The End Be Without Sorrow Τελευτων αλυπος at the Greek Overlook.

February 14 closing reception and live performances by sound artists.

Thank you to @kimschoen_studio for asking artist-collaborators of @onesoundobject to make ‘oracular pronouncements’ based off of three Delphic Maxims that have to do with time and aging. And thank you @forestlawnmuseum for making it happen!❤️ taken in Forest Lawn Museum by @kimschoen_studio

Hi friends—a reminder to save the date of Wednesday, May 21 at David’s Garden. This will be a special evening; what a treat to have Michael Marder here in L.A. !

“How to Digest an Eternity” presents an inquiry into the materiality and decay of both plastic flowers and digital media to consider decomposition, digestion, finitude and infinity.

This one-night event presents the premiere of Kim Schoen’s new film “Pollinator” (shot by @ignaciogenzon and with a score by @brendan_getz ) and a reading by philosopher Michael Marder of his new essay “A Bouquet of Eternal Decay.” Marder’s essay has been written for the first signature of Schoen’s book, A Bouquet, designed by @studiobldg (Blossom Liu and Danny Gray), which will launch that night. A conversation between Schoen and Marder, moderated by curator Zachary Korol Gold (@earth_sciences) will follow the screening and reading. taken in Los Angeles, California by @kimschoen_studio

In the shadow of climate change, and from beneath the stagnant mass of the dump— artificial flowers continue to hold out their most vibrant paradox and promise to us: we do not have to keep them alive. Next Monday, October 24th, along with Jo Ann Callis and Carter Mull, I'll be giving a talk at LACMA, for the exhibition "Objects of Desire." We'll each be speaking about our own work as well as another artist's work in the show; I've chosen to talk about Victor Burgin's inclusion "US 77."

It's free, and it's in person! I hope you can join us for this event.
