Baragouin by @kimschoen_studio.

Baragouin is an artists’ book by Los Angeles and Berlin-based artist Kim Schoen. The book is a companion piece to a video work of the same name, filmed in a now-closed residential sculpture showroom in Los Angeles.

The video Baragouin presents these sculptures—which are copies of copies of original works of art—as an important collection of art and records their “voices”—a pastiche of verbal nonsense and phonetically imitated sounds of languages from around the world. The sculptures range in style and geographic origin from Buddhist to Rococo, Neoclassical to Modernist.

The book catalogs these sculptures as a fictional collection and gives them each a clear art-historical provenance based on morphological resemblances.

I get so excited dropping off new art at the framers and this time, I’m also introducing you to my talented artist and friend @therealkimschoen’s new body of work, ‘Calibbration’ (the extra b is an intentional error and an integral part of work’s theme) currently on exhibit @dieplekgallery. Scroll through for more.

‘Calibbration’ is now showing in Los Angeles at @dieplekgallery - part of Kim Schoen’s ongoing project ‘The Empty Library’ a growing institutional fiction in which books exist without contents, shelves accumulate without knowledge, and the act of reading is replaced by the act of looking at something that could be read.

Prints from the exhibit can be ordered directly from @dieplekgallery and I ordered this one, a personal favorites from the series.

Another favorite from @therealkimschoen’s exhibit of ‘Calibbration’ at @dieplekgallery.

Hurry up framer! I can’t wait to hang this print over my sofa. I’ll share as soon as I get it back!

A peek at @dieplekgallery in the iconic Rudolph M. Schindler Modern Creators Building in West Hollywood. The ideal space to showcase @therealkimschoen’s new work.

@therealkimschoen’s exhibit is up at @dieplekgallery now through October 3 by appointment should you find yourself in the L.A. area. I highly recommend a visit or view @therealkimschoen’s work online @kimschoen_studio and @dieplekgallery. Brava, Kim!

Calibbration — the extra b is intentional. It’s borrowed from an AI image-to-text error, and it sets the tone for Kim Schoen’s new body of work: two interlocking series in video, photography, and text that look at how objects and language try to persuade us.

On view at Die Plek @dieplekgallery through October 3. By appointment.

DIE PLEK is pleased to announce the opening of ‘Calibbration’, a new body of work by LA based artist Kim Schoen. The exhibition, which takes its name from an image-to-text artifact, presents two interlocking series. The first is a photographic series of still lives with book blanks as the subjects. The second part consists of press proofs printed in Liquid Electrophotography (LED) where Schoen fed the invented book blanks titles into an AI-generating system, asking it to picture what these non-existent books might contain. Opening Reception Saturday 13 June - 5:00 - 8:00pm. Brunch preview Sunday 14 June - 11:00 - 1:00pm. (c) Kim Schoen, Pamplemousse, 2022.

Thank you @viola.wav and @brendan_getz for the incredible sound recordings Think As a Mortal Φρονει θνητα in the Gothic Corridor.

We’re playing with time.
The very thing that holds us in motion
Will you play it with me?
A little tune to leave myself with you

As we race across the days together, I wonder what pieces of me you will carry you
Maybe bits of my hopes, little sayings, the exact way I made those cookies
They take on a new shape with you

Save the date for more……

Thank you to @kimschoen_studio for asking artist-collaborators of @onesoundobject to make ‘oracular pronouncements’ based off of three Delphic Maxims that have to do with time and aging. And thank you @forestlawnmuseum for making it happen!❤️
