The artwork and adventures of Kim McNett
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I am heartbroken to hear of the loss of Maligiaq. He meant so much to us as he did to so many. He was an illuminator - someone who made you feel capable of being good. He wanted the qayaqs to stay wet, not hung on a wall as a decoration. He was a torch bearer of traditional skills and craftsmanship, but also of a character most humble and warm. The world is a lesser place today without him. by @kimsnaturedrawings

Join me and Kim Schuster
of KNBERR for a day of plankton science and mandala art! We will learn all about local plankton and observe them under the microscope, then shift into the art room to create radial designs inspired by what we've seen and learned!

November 21st at the Kachemak Bay Campus. Space is limited.

Wahoo! A smorgasbord of fresh art is up on the wall of the Bagel Shop for October and November! I am happy to be unvieling the many waterfowl pieces that I made for a project with ADFG, along with peatland botanicals, small plein air watercolors and more. I am honored to be sharing wall space with botanical plaster casts by local artist @briannalee_artist We worked together to hang our collective 87 pieces of art, phew! That you so much to the Bagel Shop for offering this awesome venue. Swing on in for a bagel and to take a look! taken in The Bagel Shop by @kimsnaturedrawings

So much happened on the R/V Tiglax during the Long Term Ecological Research cruise! It will take some time to share it all, but here are some favorite photos of my experience as an artist onboard and assisting the research scientists with data collection.

We moved around to various stations (coordinates where data has been collected year after year) in the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound where they put out a variety of instruments and plankton nets to collect samples both day and night. So many bottles of assorted sea water containing invisible mysteries (not so invisible plankton too)!

Everyone on the team was so awesome and knowledgable! There was also a lot of enthusiasm and talent for the art projects that I brought along to share.

The LTER community will be sharing posts about the trip and I will be giving a public presentation about the trip at the Kenai Peninsula College (Kachemak Bay Campus) on November 19th! @nga.lter @lter_community taken in Gulf Of Alaska by @kimsnaturedrawings

For the first time, the @nga.lter is hosting an artist in residence. We are thrilled to have Kim McNett @kimsnaturedrawings aboard our fall cruise!

While taking advantage of calm seas, Kim shared her knowledge to lead scientists and crew in a watercolor exercise aboard the R/V Tiglax.

We came back to the inner Resurrection Bay station so I have service to make a post! There has been a whole lot of trouble shooting so far with gear and instruments. I’ve already learned so much from these researchers. Yesterday I helped out with the chlorophyll station. Everyone collects their water samples from the CTD that comes up from various depths, it’s like hummingbirds at a feeder. For chlorophyll, the water goes through two fine filters and later gets tested for fluorescence and total photosynthetic productivity. We move along transect lines and they collect a suite of samples at each station with the CTD and a number of different types of plankton nets. From here we’ll go over to Prince William Sound. @lter_community by @kimsnaturedrawings

I am all packed up to head back out on the R/V Tiglax as an artist in residence for their North Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research Cruise! We will be heading out for 12 days to collect data along a transect that heads straight out to the open gulf from Seward. This is a science cruise, with UAF research teams collecting long-term data on physical and biological ocean conditions, including trace minerals, plankton, seabird and marine mammal surveys. I will rotate through science teams to see what they do and teach a few art workshops to the teams including Plankton Mandalas and Watercolor Seascapes.

In 2022 I got to go on the Tiglax for a VOW residency and we went all along the Aleutian Island chain, making landings at numerous remote islands along the way. The journal that I kept on that cruise is currently on display at the Anchorage Museum. This cruise will be out in the open sea with a lot of work to do to collect the data.

Though the Tiglax brings artists on board as part of the Voices of the Wilderness residency program, this is a new program offered through LTER and the first time they have brought an artist onboard for this research-based cruise. I will be giving a public talk in Homer at the Kachemak Bay Campus on November 19th and a workshop series on the 21st to share about my trip and what I learned. by @kimsnaturedrawings

Here's a little tribute to the plants along the Tutka Backdoor Trail! The memory of an adventure experience almost always pairs with a set of species of plants and the sense of presence that they bestow to a place. Here are some that will stand out for me:

Deer Cabbage: We accepted the mission to collect some of these aquatic plant rhizomes for Ed Berg to investigate. He had found some fossils in the peat at Outside Beach in Seldovia that he though might be Deer Cabbage, though this plant doesn't (currently) grow in that area. It grows all along the Tutka Trail in very wet, peaty/muddy soils on slopes, often with just bedrock below. I made an investigation in the field and one thing that nature journaling does is create a deeper process of observation. It's a great tool to help guide curiosity. I drew a flower, then sat for a while with my journal, but upon looking at the plants again, I saw that it had 6 petals, not 5! At first I was aghast, I had already gone over it in pen! But then I realized, no, most flowers did have 5, just not this one. Then Erin McKittrick - Homer Electric Association District 3 and I worked together to document how many 5 vs 6 petal flowers were growing in that patch. The ratio was 74 5-petals to 10 6-petals.

"Jewel" Moss: Nothing wrong with coming up with your own name for a plant so that you can refer to it within your party! Name-giving was an interesting thing to witness along the trail, mostly related to place-names - what places justify a name, what makes a good name and which ones actually stick. Jewel Moss was one of my favorite plants along the way, vibrant green and appearing like ooze that flowed over saturated cobble seeps in the alpine. Many plants are direct expressions of hydrologic conditions. They call this "jewel moss" because it's so dense that water droplet nestle on top like jewels.

"Perfect" Saxifrage: A made-up name along the way by Valisa May Higman, Artist to describe the leaves of a particular Saxifrage. Her interest in the Saxifrage made me pay closer attention to them. @valisahigman by @kimsnaturedrawings

Yesterday's Mushroom Art Workshop at the Pratt Museum was a smash! I am in awe of how far along participants got in just a two hour workshop. I've always added some field sketching to my mushroom ID workshops, but this was my first time offering a workshop specifically on illustrating mushrooms and focusing on a variety of media and techniques. I will definitely be offering this again next year! taken in Pratt Museum by @kimsnaturedrawings

My favorite fungi find of the year is Hydnellum peckii - bleeding tooth fungus! This batch was glowing fresh and just so magically colored! Not to mention that it "bleeds" red droplets from its spine!

I will be teaching a Mushroom Illustration class at the Pratt Museum this Friday 5:30-7:30! We will work indoors, select from a collection of fungi that I have gathered and choose your media of choice - whether you want to go with a field sketching style, watercolor, or play with markers on toned paper like I've done here. Registration required and space is limited, so sign up ASAP to save your spot! taken in Pratt Museum by @kimsnaturedrawings
