As part of the Alaska SeaLife Center's World Ocean Day celebration, community members were invited to explore and participate in “Song of the Plankton”, by local artist Kim McNett in partnership with Petra H. Lenz and Lauren N.Block of the University of Hawai’i, and coordinated by Kaitie Gavenus from the Center for Alaska Coastal Studies. This interdisciplinary project demonstrates the powerful connection between science and art. Community members were invited to observe plankton under microscopes, and create their own mandala-style art inspired by the beauty and complexity of ocean life. #WorldOceansDay #ASLC #Ocean #MarineLife #Education #FamilyFriendly #Seward #June2026 #AlaskaSeaLifeCenter #CORaL #CORaLNetwork #Alaska #Collaboration #Science #culture #Knowledge #Plankton #Art #citizenscience #exploration #workshop #artsandcrafts #artist

In celebration of #WorldOceansDay , the @alaskasealifecenter featured a captivating new exhibit that bridges the worlds of microscopic marine science and fine art. The "Plankton Mandala Art Exhibit" is the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between a team of ocean ecologists from @soest_uh and an Alaska-based artist and educator. The exhibition showcases intricate artwork that captures the beauty of the smallest ocean animals, all created during an artist-in-residence program at Seward Middle School and community workshops at Alaska SeaLife Center.
.
“It is easy to overlook the details of an organism—until you try to draw it,” said Petra Lenz, project lead and research professor at the Pacific Biosciences Research Center in @soest_uh . “Combining art and science allows us to introduce concepts and characteristics that are easily missed. Sensory hairs, eyes, and symmetry take on a new meaning when they become part of a drawing."
.
“A mandala is built with repeating patterns and forms, which helps students tap into a creative flow-state,” said Kim McNett @kimsnaturedrawings , Alaska artist who co-developed this innovative educational experience along with Lenz and UH graduate student Lauren Block. “The Plankton Mandala project uses both science for our minds and creative expression for our hearts to grow gratitude for the source of life in the sea.”

Long before cameras and computers, artists played an important role in scientific research through careful observation and drawing. In "Arctic Marine Science: Sikuliaq to Shore," field journals by Homer-based artist and naturalist Kim McNett reflect the ongoing connection between art and science.

Her nature sketches invite deeper observation of marine and coastal environments. “Nature journaling offers an interdisciplinary approach to learning about the natural world,” McNett says. “The goal is to deepen your observation, which is useful for both scientific curiosity and artistic interpretation.”

Through artwork, research and stories connected to the Arctic, "Arctic Marine Science: Sikuliaq to Shore" explores how observation helps shape understanding of changing northern environments.

On view beginning May 15 at the Anchorage Museum.

Here comes the sun ☀️

And with it—moments of creativity, reflection, and connection.

Our 2026 Statewide Land Trust Conference is a wrap.

From nature journaling and hands-on art projects to science and peatlands, the past two days with Alaska’s Land Trusts & partners reminded us that conservation isn’t just about protecting land—it’s about deepening our relationship with it.

Thank you to everyone who slowed down, tuned in, shared ideas, and made space for both learning and joy. 💚

We are grateful for this community and all the ways we come together to care for the places we love.

A special thank you to our amazing hosts, caterers, and supporters who helped make it all happen:
@redbirdkitchen @alasandrosmarket @vidas_thai_food @prattmuseum @landsendalaska @grogshopak Islands & Ocean Visitor Center, Cole’s Market, Karen & Bill Wuestenfeld, and our 2025 KHLT Gala donors.

And thank you to all of the participants and partners:

Places of enchantment

Stephanie Boxall reviews Peatlands: A Journey Between Land and Water by @alysf, exploring how these often misunderstood landscapes are revealed as living, vital beings rich in history, carbon, beauty and meaning.

Peatlands, she tells us, make up around 13% of the UK’s land-mass, and peat can be found in at least 180 countries across the world. Half land and half water, peatlands wouldn’t have been possible before the spread of plants. They began to form around 370 million years ago and have been storing carbon ever since. One of the most striking statistics in the book was the revelation that peat stores around 600 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide world-wide. But peat only stores carbon if it’s wet, and then “it holds the balance of life in its body because the peatlands are one of the ways in which this Earth stays cool enough to be inhabited.”

This is not just a book about bogs. It’s a book about love: love for the land, the planet we live on, and the people we share it with. Fowler has a very engaging writing style: “I want – I need – you to love these spaces.” I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that the end of the book brought a lump to my throat, as if I’d just finished an absorbing novel full of characters to whom I’d become attached.
