After failing to finish making an outfit for a wedding last fall, I was so relieved I could debut THIS dress on time for another wedding! 👗 It’s got wonderful movement and yet I simultaneously feel like a painting.

While I originally planned to make a bustier dress, the fitting process got the best of me, so I had to abandon that idea in order to finish ANYthing in time. I instead turned to my trusty McCall’s hacked #M8195M8211combo that I’ve now made 4 times! (I haven’t posted the 3rd yet; it’s coming eventually.) The combination is #M8211 View A’s sleeves / back bodice and #M8195’s skirt / bodice (but shirred). I gathered and lengthened the circle skirt to 24”, and added a contrast tier in a different print from the same fabric collection. I slashed & spread the bodice’s “cups” to be more suitable for my chest shape…I think McCall’s drafts for B cup (I’m G), so my edits gave me a better gathered look, and the bottom cup seam doesn’t ride up.

This dreamy fabric is from the “Painterly Petals” collection from Robert Kaufman, which I bought 2 years ago for a patchwork dress that I ended up never starting. Oops! Earlier this year I spotted the brand Batsheva using prints from this same fabric collection (under the name “Monet”), and those visuals brought my floral green dream back into focus! Luckily I already had it stashed and could cut into it when inspiration finally hit!

And I convinced my dude Brian to sew his tie (last photo) using another print from the same collection, also from my stash. Just a hint of matching 🌸🌿

I was not prepared for how long it would take to sew ruffles onto a midi circle skirt, but then I measured the circle hem and it was around 23 ft (7m!), so the time-suck made more sense. For the extra tier, I used a gathering foot for the first time, and it really sped up *part* of the process, at least.

@pompommag issue 44 : Layers + Layers is now officially for sale in stores and online! Inside it you can find my design, the #ColourbarHat, along with a bunch of other rad knit and crochet designs that create the effect of color layering.

Colourbar is a slouchy hat with 3 sizes (note: size 3 has a larger motif), 2 brim styles, and 2 pompom styles. I’m wearing size 2 with a folded brim and colorblocked pompom, and holding size 3 with a standard brim and speckled pompom. You get a contrast color edge no matter which brim style too!

I used #KindredRed Rad DK yarn in my samples, but if you want a matching Colourbar kit dyed by me, I don’t have a dyeing setup in my new place just yet. I’m waiting for water, light, and electricity (all the important things 😅). I will post on IG and my newsletter when ready though! ❗Remember, you NEVER need to use the same yarn as what’s used in a pattern❗(unless you want to.) I always support using scraps or your stash, and 5 out of the 8 colors used in the hat are in very small amounts…so go scrap happy if you can!

———

Also, TOMORROW, on Saturday, March 18, Pom Pom is hosting a 🆓 virtual party for the new issue! It’s at 5pm GMT / 6pm CET / 1pm EDT / 12pm CDT / 11am MDT / 10am PDT. Find all the info on @pompommag’s site under “Issue 44 Virtual Cast On Party.”

There will be some games with prizes, including some prize yarn from me! But also from: Ara Stella // Biches & Búches // La Bien Aimée // Ficolana // Knitting for Olive // Kremke Soul Wool // Qing Fibre. Hope to see you there! Holiday party outfit incoming, and omg, it’s my first jumpsuit! Fancy Rosie the Riveter vibes 🌈👩🏼‍🔧 My fabric is from @sewtogrow’s new collection, and this print is perfect for when you need a break from pattern-matching! This was a test-sew of The Penny (#LeimThePenny) by @leim_jumpsuits, a new pattern with a special bathroom-friendly feature.

I’ve always avoided jumpsuits because, wellll…why should I have to fully bare myself to pee?! Bleh. But Leim’s clever jumpsuits have a separated back waist and 2 side zippers — this allows you to open just the trouser sides and fold the bottom out of the way when nature calls, WITHOUT removing the entire bodice! It’s REALLY hard to explain, but @leim_jumpsuits has an explanatory video if you’re curious. Plus if you’ve got big saddlebags like me, the side zips make it possible to have a nice fitted waist AND still be able to get the pants on.

Also I must shout out the size chart : Leim has the most comprehensive list of measurements I’ve ever seen in a sewing pattern! I’m talking 15+ measurement points, making it so much easier to decide which sizes to blend between when adjusting 🙏

I made some slight mods to my final test version. The jumpsuit bodice is drafted to be supportive and braless, so the apex is lower than what I’d need with a bra on (which I wanted due to my larger cup size and the threat of rashes). So I shortened the bodice at the high bust line, then also did a FBA. To hide my bra, I widened the shoulders and did 2 back buttonbands instead of one. I barely had to do any pants adjustments this time, aside from lengthening the back crotch hook and shortening the front rise due to my hip tilt, which is a lot less adjustments than usual for me…NOICE.

A blustery, misty day in Point Reyes was the perfect place for layering a bodysuit and jeans. Cold months make me reach for close-to-the-body layers, or else the wind sweeps through my clothes and ices the skin!

You may no longer recognize them, but my jeans are the corset waist-hacked #JustMyLuckJeans that I sewed months ago, but now are acid washed by ME and not machine!! I’m so excited that I managed to achieve a denim wash that is usually found only in stores, but mine is DIY on handsewn jeans that I made custom for my shape 🍐 A new detail is the frayed hem that I added separately to lengthen the jeans, because they shrunk.

And I finally finished an entire project, a neon pink #ElysianBodysuit with inside-out details! I love a bust contour. I know there are other sewing patterns in this serged / overlocked style (I can’t fit their small size charts 🥲 sooo IDC). Luckily the Elysian pattern is more size-inclusive and had most of the style lines I wanted already, and I just added more!

For other changes, I lengthened the torso and arms, and switched to a fully lined square neck because I didn’t like how the back neckline had trim when the front doesn’t. I added crotch snaps, which honestly should be a standard for bodysuits…we need bathroom breaks 😵‍💫 and it’s easier to put a bodysuit on over the head if ya got big hips, instead of forcing my saddlebags into a much smaller neck opening!

I didn’t achieve a perfect fit, and the underbust and armpit wrinkles bother me because I didn’t edit the curves to match mine well enough, but I’ve still worn it 4 times in 3 weeks! I’m not ripping out all those serged lines to fix it 😅 (I used a neon red machine embroidery thread. My serger hated it, but the color was perfect!)

It’s been tooooo looong. I’ve felt all dried up inside lately 🫠 (No thanks to the cheeto, but my drought was happening for a while due to ongoing medical stuff). Yet my creativity is starting to flow again thanks to finally finishing some procrastinated projects — sometimes that’s enough to break the inactivity cycle. Say hello to my scribbled jeans!

This is my second pair of #WorshipJeans, and they are based on my previous pair’s adjustments, with a higher back rise. I actually made these in at the beginning of the year (you can even see the jeans in their original form in my post about my shirred Basque top). But I didn’t love how this lighter weight denim showed my underwear and the pocket bag outlines, so my plan was always to decorate them! Cue procrastination.

Anyway, after accidentally melting lipstick on them in the dryer, it was finally time to break out the acrylic markers and spiff up the jeans completely. I just can’t be an offwhite pants kinda gal! Scribbles and paint fit into my colorful messy life better anyway 👩🏼‍🎨 The black smeared a bit from walking before heat setting the paint, oops, but the rest of the colors are doing well. Due to body changes in the last 10 months, these jeans are now too small and squash my butt, but whatever, I’ll keep wearing them until I can’t button them!

Also, I got to return to San Francisco last week for my dude’s birthday, where the bright backdrops are aplenty. We used to live in the Bay Area for nearly a decade (5 years in SF, 4 in Oakland), and it was so wonderful to be back in a more colorful place 🥰

The #FavoriteFlowersFabric collection from @rubystarsociety is now in fabric shops, so I thought I’d share more photos of my self-drafted romper that I made in the spring with one of the prints! 🌷 I’ve been wearing this romper sooo often lately, because the secret shorts aspect makes me feel really secure when wearing a mini length.

More detailed information on this romper is in my previous post about it, but here’s a quick rundown! It’s princess seamed with a fussy cut bodice quilt block, a basque waist, a shirred back for fluctuations, and big gathered circle shorts that are meant to look like a dress.

Also, no pattern… it’s entirely self-drafted to my body shape! Before this project, I made a duct tape bodice to perfect my princess seam lines for a bodice block, but now I’m working on a mannequin made from a plaster body cast for even better fitting. Almost done with that too… 👯‍♀️

🎂 My birthday dress tradition is back this year! (And I actually finished BEFORE last Sunday 🤪 Am I finally adulting at 38?)

I don’t ever wear backless things, but the heat has me craving less fabric, and the scrunchie strap cutouts in this sewing pattern caught my eye. I modified it with extra straps for a little more coverage while also staying cool. It’s such a summery look with this fabric, plus the print has light neon pink 🌸 …my kryptonite!

This pattern is New Look 6731 #nl6731, which doesn’t come in my size 🫥 so mods were required right off the bat. I needed much more room at the hip and butt, so instead of cutting the front & back on the fold, I cut them mirrored (and patternmatched that center front 😙🧩). This way I could modify the bottom half of the pattern pieces into trapezoidal panels for volume and shape! I also added armhole darts, and bias facing because the regular facing kept rolling out.

As for the extra back coverage, I wanted to emulate a 🆒 dress I found on Pinterest with woven perpendicular scrunchie back straps! Besides changing the pattern’s shoulder straps to be vertical instead of an X, I also added another 2 horizontal straps to hide more of my back and bra. Since I don’t like showing my back normally, I’ll probably wear this dress as a pinafore layered over a tank in the future… when it’s not 97°F (36°C) 🥵

Perfect timing for the #SunsOutSundressesOn challenge though!

I meant to share these last week, but oops! Here’s more photos of my new free pattern with @pompommag and @hobbii_yarn, the #SuncatcherTee 🌈 ✨ This is my original version that I knitted last year. (can’t you tell by the glowing hair?) I should have taken new photos, but I have bronchitis again 😮‍💨

It’s knitted with fingering weight cotton (Rainbow Cotton 8/4) at a slightly looser gauge, making this an airy summer top that lets you stay cool. We had record heat temps a few weeks ago where I live, so cotton or linen knits are the only kind I can tolerate right now!

You may notice a length difference here versus what was published — we decided to crop the tee in the released pattern, but it’s easy enough to add another row of squares for a high hip length as shown on me! I spent a WHILE making the square order random and not repetitive, so if you want to add more length, I suggest looking at the smallest size’s square chart (in the pattern), since it has the most rows of squares.

——-

The pattern uses Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 in 9 colors : 094 Wisteria, 077 Light Petrol Blue, 055 Sunny Yellow, 062 Light Pink, 071 Light Sky Blue, 049 Peach, 046 Old Rose, 084 Green and 018 Lime.

You can get the pattern for 🆓 using the link in my profile - no yarn purchase required! Amalia, a chubby demi-girl with white hair edged in pink, wears a multicolored knitted top covered in randomized squares. She’s in front of a blue barn with peach accents with hands on hips. by @kindred.red

🌈🪟✨ Introducing my new knitting design pattern, the #SuncatcherTee! It’s an intarsia crop top with a wide square neck (my favorite neckline), and is worked in 9 colors. This is from the #PomPomXHobbiiSummer2024 collection of 13 knitting & crochet patterns launched yesterday, all free! No yarn purchase is required to access the patterns either — there’s a link to my pattern in my profile.

Last year before its closure, Pom Pom Magazine had planned for this summer’s issue to be inspired by stained glass; my vision for this tee was a flickering scene through a faceted window that makes the colors pixellated and distorted. It’s also like the colors created by a suncatcher window decoration that throws rainbow colors onto a different surface, hence the name, the Suncatcher tee! It was really a joyful surprise to bring back this design in a more accessible (free and digital) form after the closure of the magazine cancelled the print issue where it was originally to be published.

Knitting with 9 colors in the same row may be daunting, but I created a little intarsia box that became my best friend during this project 😆 (see the last photo!) It’s a wooden wine gift box from Joann’s, with 2 wedge feet added for a better angle. I folded a cardboard panel into a zigzag to create yarn pockets inside the box. If you keep your yarn neat this way, every other row untangles the previous row! You can also use yarn bobbins, yarn butterflies, or even clothespins to keep your yarn tidy while knitting intarsia.

👋😅 It’s been 2 months since I’ve posted! Some bittersweet stuff has shaken up my life. Like, I spent weeks making a duct tape bodice sloper and muslins/toiles to perfect the princess seams for sewing this floral outfit, but soon it may be for naught due to recommended surgery 🥲 But I’m happy with how it turned out, at least...sew for your body now!

Anyway, I self-drafted this princess seam ROMPER (yay secret shorts) from my sloper with a rectangular front panel, perfect for highlighting a fussy-cut floral quilt block. Last year I drafted a deep basque waist + gathered dolphin hem romper for a Barbie bustier outfit that I never finished (one day…), so I reused the lower half of my drafted pattern for this romper! I added a side zip and shoulder buttons to get in and out of it, while the back is shirred for body fluctuations.

I never thought I’d be a romper person because of previously bad fits 🐫 👀 but sewing corrects that! Now I love having the look of a minidress but with a little more modesty. I can do tons of twirling and being active with my niblings 🌀

———

🌷 Now onto the FABRIC! This cuuuuute floral print is from an upcoming @rubystarsociety collaborative collection, “Favorite Flowers” by @kmelkight and @iamrashidacolemanhale, coming in August 2024. The print is called “Meadow - Vintage Paper,” and was gifted to me for my first #RSSMakers project. It comes in a few colorways, and some on canvas too.

Three of the flowers in this print looked like tiny ribbon star quilt blocks, so I decided to put some quilt blocks on the bodice’s front panel (and later pockets too) to match! My vision was flowers radiating outwards from the center of the blocks, so I very fussily cut from my scraps to create that effect. I used @modafabrics’ Bella Solids “Carnation” for the contrast color. Amalia is a chubby demi-girl wearing a handsewn romper that looks like a dress, covered in a repeating geometric floral pattern on a beige background. On the bodice and front pockets are quilt blocks using a contrast peachy-pink. Behind her is a tall bush covered in small white flowers. by @kindred.red

It’s been a year since moving back out west, so why not say howdy to some horseshoe jeans! These are @forest.and.thread’s new pattern, the #JustMyLuckJeans, which I got to test-sew. I love the darts in this pattern that uniquely shape the legs (too bad my hyperextended knees mostly hide them ☹️). The darts create more places for cool topstitching too, giving fashion cowboy ℧ 🎀 ℧ This pattern is incredibly detailed, so if you love barrel legs like I do, snatch this one up!

I went a little off pattern (with the designer’s approval) by adding a lace-up front. Through my technique research, I found some jeans that layered laces OVER a zipper & looked kinda like a corset. It’s great for my weight fluctuations because I can tighten in the morning and loosen them as the day goes on.

I fell in love with the corsetry look, but it was surprisingly hard to recreate it since it threw off my jeans fit and balance so badly, so I had to redo the entire jeans 🥲 So this is technically my third pair after the regular muslin/toile and the failure pair. I only had enough fabric left to cut 2 new full front legs, so the back legs got pieced together with a diagonal line that matches the front knee dart. (Another tester did this first, and I was thankful for the idea!) I added extra side topstitching to make it look more intentional!

These might have a different denim wash soon, we’ll see 👀

Long time no s̵e̵e̵ sew 😜 Making this top was a mood-booster after the lethargy from long sickness dulled my shine! I need more cute tops suitable for winter, so I sewed this super-shirred blouse to match the dress I sewed in 2022 (which was my most popular garment EVER) using this same #PainterlyPetals fabric 🌸🌿 Make every scrap count when a gorgeous print comes your way!

For a pattern, I hacked something I had test-sewed back in the day, so I already knew it fit : the #BasqueBlouse. To get a stretchy but cinched look, I slashed & spread the pattern pieces to create enough width for shirring while keeping the basque waist shape. I also added a front tie placket that’s pattern matched!! 🧩

My other adjustments were basically for weatherproofing. I lengthened the bodice by 3” / 7.6cm, raised the back neckline, and lengthened the sleeves. I sadly cut the sleeves a bit too short and then added a cuff ruffle that I don’t like…I just wanted the sleeves to end in shirring like the rest of the bodice. Sigh! Too late I realized I should remove the sleeve’s cuff shirring and then attach a separate shirred panel for more length, but that’s for another day.
