JoBpportunity!

Amber's smile illuminated the Better Together job fair on Wednesday at Jacob Chapel Baptist Church in Tallahassee.

"I'm grateful," Amber said as she rang the Opportunity Bell to celebrate being hired by Sonny's BBQ.

Sonny's was one of 17 employers and several resource partners who connected with 152 people. It was also the second time this year that Jacob Chapel hosted a Better Together job fair.

251 interviews were conducted or scheduled, and several people received multiple interview opportunities. Fifty people were offered jobs immediately.

Thank you to Jacob Chapel, the employers, resource partners, and volunteers for your support.

Go to bettertogetherus.org/job-fairs/ to stay updated on our job fairs in your area.

Living for Cody...

Landon and Rachael met while living in a Salvation Army shelter. Both had aged out of foster care.

They fell in love.

When Rachael got pregnant, they had to leave the shelter. They found a room to rent for $400 a month. When the surroundings there became unhealthy, Landon encouraged Rachael to go to Visitation House, a temporary home for pregnant women in crisis.

On August 15, with Landon by her side, Rachael gave birth at AdventHealth Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City. They named the boy Cody. He was healthy, but Rachael wasn't. Complications during delivery weakened her physically. Stress from simply trying to survive overwhelmed her mentally. As a precaution, Rachael would have to be transported to a hospital in Naples for observation.

Rachael understood the requirement but worried about Cody. He couldn't be with Landon, who was now staying in a hotel. Rachael called Sheena Smith, the resident director at Visitation House, for guidance.

Sheena contacted Tara Williams, a family support manager with Better Together.

Tara immediately reached out to Rachael and Landon. She listened to their story and told them about Fernanda and Ezekiel Baumgardner, one of our host families who volunteered to care for Cody until Rachael was released.

On August 19, Tara picked up Cody. "Thank you," Rachael said to Tara.

Two days later, Rachael was released from the hospital in Naples and traveled by train back to DeLand. She was overjoyed to see Cody, Landon, and Tara at the station. She was also grateful to the Baumgardners for caring for Cody.

"It was a big blessing," said Rachael. "I love those people," added Landon.

After taking the family to Cody's doctor's appointment, Tara drove them to Landon's hotel.

"I love you," Landon told Rachael. He kissed Cody, then grabbed a plastic bag of nearly all his possessions.

Rachael watched Landon walk into the hotel.

Soon, he would be moving into a group foster home for 90 days via DCF's Aftercare program. She would stay with Cody at Visitation House for four months.

And, if they trust God and work hard, they could live in an apartment. Together.

What love builds...

Tameika was eight days past her due date.

But she held off going to HealthPark Medical Center because she had no one to care for her other children. Fearing that they might be placed in foster care, Tameika summoned the strength to hold out as long as possible.

When Tameika shared her situation with an employee at the Salvation Army shelter where she was staying, the employee told her about Better Together.

Our team connected Tameika to one of our host families who volunteered to provide short-term care for her children. Knowing that they would be safe, Tameika went to HealthPark, alone.

But she wasn't alone for long.

Danette Peterson Fleming, a Better Together volunteer, was at Tameika's side when Royal Blu, a healthy baby boy, came into the world. Danette stayed with Tameika for hours after.

A week later Tameika reunited with her other children.

"There are still good people out there," said Tameika about the host family and Danette, with whom she's become close.

Recently, Tameika, who is working and moved into a place of her own, met up with Danette at Mission Community Church in Fort Myers. They laughed together and took turns holding Royal Blu.

Then Tameika expressed what only love can build.

"We're family now."

Remembering...

Today is World Photography Day.

So I'm taking a moment to remember Officer Julian Keen Jr. and his family.

On June 14, 2020, Julian, 30, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, was shot and killed in LaBelle when he attempted to stop a hit-and-run suspect while off duty.

We miss you, Julian.

Hold up the light…

Nine months ago curtains of depression closed around Rosa.

She only saw the light of her two children and her unborn child. However, a positive drug test during a hospital stay late in her pregnancy nearly extinguished that light too.

Following protocol, the hospital contacted the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Fearing losing her children to foster care, Rosa challenged the test result. She also provided prescriptions for medicines she was taking for preeclampsia, a serious blood pressure condition. Rosa's drug test result was ruled a false positive. DCF also cleared her. But sensing that Rosa, a single mother, was overwhelmed, the DCF caseworker told her about Better Together.

Rosa soon met with our team and remembers feeling safe and supported when she heard one of them say, "We're not here to take your family apart; we're here to keep it together."

Rosa then met Better Together mentor Kristi Grigsby of Naples.
"You don't have to carry the burden of changing your world alone," Kristi told Rosa. They became fast friends. Weekly conversations grew their relationship, and upon learning that Rosa was a Christian, Kristi began sharing scriptures and worship songs via texts. Over the next nine months, Rosa began noticing a light that was in her life all along.

The light of Christ.

Rosa smiled more. Believed in herself more. She got a job and began saving money for an apartment that had a room for her children. Better Together volunteer host families occasionally cared for Rosa's children so she could work overtime. Her relationship with Kristi and Christ grew significantly too.

"God is amazing, and so is Kristi. They and Better Together helped me feel that I'm not alone," said Rosa, who recently secured an apartment (with a room for her children) with help from the Collier County Homeless Coalition.

Kristi also is amazed at how God is showing up in Rosa's life.

And she is grateful for the blessing of holding up the light of Christ for Rosa to see.

Susan Finazzo has a secret.

She feels a little guilt when she volunteers at Better Together job fairs.

"I feel like I'm coming more for me than for the people because I get so much out of it," said Susan recently at our job fair at All Nations Life Development Christian Center in Port St. Lucie.

David Abrams, a job seeker, kindly disagreed.

"I gained a lot of confidence from Susan. She was very caring too," said David, a husband and father, who was among hundreds of people meeting with employers and resource partners.

Susan doesn't remember how she learned about our work to keep children out of foster care and help families attain economic self-sufficiency. But when she did, she felt compelled to volunteer.

"I've been in places (in life) where I've needed help from other people. I was a single mom for 10 years. I understand what it's like to struggle," said Susan.

Before leaving the job fair, David, who had several follow-up interviews scheduled, confidently made his way over to Susan.

He had a secret to share.

Love supplies all...

Love doesn't fit in backpacks.

So, volunteers at Mission Community Church placed love in the hearts of families attending Mission's recent back-to-school event in Fort Myers.

Glad-to-see-you-hugs, easy-like-Sunday-morning smiles, lean-on-me prayers, and undivided attention created moments of encouragement and gratitude.

50 families registered for the event presented by Mission and Better Together. Dinner from Fancy's Southern Cafe was served. Priority Marketing and First Assembly of God donated backpacks and school supplies, while Crumpton Creamery donated ice cream.

Graciela, eating ice cream with her two sons, shared her feelings about the efforts of everyone involved.

"I'm grateful. We feel the love."

God makes a way...

LaKisha talks to God, and God talks back.

Six years ago, LaKisha felt God's presence during her surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from her spine. As the doctors worked, LaKisha asked God why her life was collapsing.

Trauma she carried from growing up in foster care haunted her. A cherished relationship ended. Her father was dying from cancer. She had no family by her side apart from a cousin and her children. She was ready to give up.

But God told her to remain faithful. LaKisha woke from surgery with grateful tears.

In the years that followed, no matter how challenging life became for LaKisha—whether due to job loss, homelessness, or another fight with cancer—she endured.

In November of last year, while at work, LaKisha suffered chemical burns to her hands. She tried to continue working but couldn't; the injury was too severe. Financial difficulties ensued. She was in jeopardy of losing her home and struggled to feed her children.

But just when LaKisha couldn't see a way through, God made a way.

In late April, she reached out to Better Together.

Family support manager Naomi Kuriatnyk went to Ocala to meet LaKisha and her children. Naomi brought groceries and listened to her story. They developed a plan that would help LaKisha thrive again.

Partnership manager Cassidy Vaughn connected LaKisha to Brother's Keeper for rental assistance. Cassidy also facilitated a donation of an e-bike to LaKisha from supporter Alex F., arranged a birthday celebration for her daughter, Nevaeh, and introduced LaKisha to volunteer mentor Alecia Randolph.

Community partners and volunteers to include the Central Florida Community Action Agency, John 3:16 & 17 Boxing Club, Fashion Cuts Academy, Weide Automotive Repair, Sarah Leppert, and Aurora Herring have also provided essential resources.

"I've never had people to genuinely care for me like everyone with Better Together does," said LaKisha, who recently began working at FedEx and is in training for a managerial job at a retirement center.

"I'm just so thankful that God is real," said LaKisha.

"I won't give up on life."

A living declaration...

This weekend we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Courageous American disruptors made this wartime declaration while fighting against Great Britain for the right to self-govern. The declaration laid claim to the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

This living declaration continues to help guide humanity's long walk to freedom. It motivates individuals to exhibit bravery, families to thrive, and communities to unite to achieve what they cannot accomplish alone.

The spirit of the declaration infuses the work of Better Together.

Our volunteers, unafraid to do hard things, are helping end the foster care crisis in Florida.

Host families provide short-term care for children. Mentors walk alongside parents. Church partners host job fairs and outreach events. Community partners share vital wrap-around services.

Yet, it's God's grace that keeps our country, communities, and families united.

Have a safe and meaningful Fourth of July.
