Flipping the 1976 register of the Lagos Polo Club

The archives of the #LagosPoloClub offer a crisp aperture of a playground of Nigeria’s rich and famous.

Established in 1904 when a handful of British naval officers cleared an unpretentious patch of turf, the club began life as a modest colonial outpost.

Over the next century, this enclave transformed into the undisputed redoubt of Nigerian high society.

The club’s sporting pedigree was irrevocably minted in 1962 with the donation of the Majekodunmi Cup, a trophy presented by the patrician physician, Chief Dr. Moses Majekodunmi.

Played at the highest handicap in Africa, the tournament quickly became a fixture on the international equestrian calendar, drawing jet-set patrons, Argentine professionals, and moneyed crowds.

The pages of this vintage membership register present a rolodex of power, capturing the who-was-who of a segment of Nigeria’s elite during the oil boom years.

Among the gilded entries are future President Alhaji Shehu Shagari, listed as an Honorary Member, alongside senior officers who shaped the country, including Major General Hassan Usman Katsina, a legendary figure in African polo, Brigadier Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Brigadier Sotomi, Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson, and Lt. Col. Tunde Idiagbon.

The diplomatic corps was embodied by figures like the Ambassador of Iran, while the pinnacle of Nigerian enterprise was represented by grandees such as Sir Mobolaji Bank-Anthony and corporate titans Adekunle Ojora, Chief Chris Ogunbanjo, Antonio Oladeinde Fernandez, and Talabi Adebayo Braithwaite.

Interestingly, the Ojoras were one of the few listed as Mr. and Mrs.

Lady Manuwa, founder of Aunty Ayo School, was one of other female members.

Of course, Alhaji Dantata, a famous patron, was listed too.

The influential Lebanese community was present with members like Chief Lababedi, El Khalil, Chagoury, Fadlallah, and Safieddine.

Political leaders like Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, of "politics without bitterness" fame, were not left behind.

All in all, the membership register is an interesting artefact of a bygone era.

Repost #lastweekend .....Congratulations to Gaston Polo Team, who lifted #TheDukeofCornwall’s Trophy on The Queen’s Ground just two weeks after claiming The Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup in the very same spot 👏

Gaston defeated Desert Knights 9–6 to take the trophy, with Beltran Laulhe named MVP. The @imagesofpolo best playing pony -BPP was awarded to Oh Mi Amor, played by Beltran Laulhe.

The prizes were awarded to the teams by the Chairman Lt Col Sean O’Dwyer.
