What do two of West Africa’s most remarkable kingdoms have in common?
Immense wealth, rich cultures, and an indelible mark on history.

The Yoruba and Edo are unique in their own right, but their histories share some fascinating connections.

Here are five of them. Which one surprised you the most? And what other cultures do you think share similar historical ties?

What makes Yoruba cosmology so distinctive is how close the divine feels to us.

Even the Orishas carry something unmistakably human, in their loves, their conflicts, their flaws, their desires and their power.

In Part Two, we explore five more deities you need to know.

Swipe through, and tell me which story feels closest to something you’ve experienced.

Dahomey, in present-day Benin, was a powerful kingdom whose rise brought it into conflict with the mighty Oyo Empire.

At the heart of its military history were the Agojie, an all-female corps of warriors whose story is far more complex than the film lets on.

In this episode of The Gele Series, I explore the rise of Dahomey, its conflict with Oyo, and the story of the legendary women warriors who inspired The Woman King.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Yorubaland was a landscape of rising cities, falling empires and shifting loyalties.

From that turbulence emerged commanders, kingmakers and rebels who helped determine which powers rose and which fell.

Their stories remind us that history is rarely a simple story of heroes and villains.
Here are five Yoruba warriors you should know.

Who do you think deserves a place on the next list?

There are many things that make us uniquely Nigerian and in a world that often overlooks us, let me remind you what it means to be part of a culture that transcends borders, trends, and time.

Look around you.
Look at you.
There is nothing quite like us.
Be proud to be Nigerian.

Freedom has looked different for us over the years.

But the road to independence was shaped by people who refused to accept colonial rule and kept pushing, no matter the cost.
Some were imprisoned. Some lost everything. Some paid the ultimate price. Here are a few of the many names who helped make October 1st possible.

Whose story stays with you the most? And who else belongs on this list?

Who is your god?

In Yoruba cosmology, there isn’t just one.
There are hundreds of Orishas, divine forces born from Olodumare, the supreme creator, each carrying a different piece of what it means to be human.

They command thunder and justice, love and transformation, iron and fire, creation and destruction, wind and rebirth.

They are not distant, flawless deities. They love, they rage, they forgive, they create. They are mirrors of us, and centuries after crossing the Atlantic in chains, their names are still spoken in Lagos, in Havana, in Bahia, in Port of Spain, in Brooklyn.

In part one, we’re introducing a few of these gods.

They say greatness often comes at a cost.

And for Oyo, the very things that made the empire powerful — its military might, political system and vast networks of trade — would eventually expose cracks within it.

But empires rarely fall for one reason.

Oyo’s story is a reminder that power can be built over centuries… and unravelled in ways no one sees coming.
