To my understanding. The Aare Ona Kakanfo is a position restricted to the Oyo kingdom. There were instances of having more than one Aare at the same time but located in different fronts of Oyo kingdom. An example is Afonja of Ilorin manning the northern frontier while Kurunmi manned the South Western frontier. The other Yoruba groups have their own war leaders mostly bearing the Balogun title with subordinates bearing Otun Balogun and Osi Balogun and other titles downwards in hierarchies. An example is the Ijebu people who at no time were under the Oyo kingdom and any Aare Ona Kakanfo. It's on record that before the British defeated the Ijebu no non Ijebu person entered Ijebu Land and come out alive. Non Ijebu who entered disappeared for ever. Not to be seen again.
