Finlay Taylor: Run, Hide, Hibernate

9 - 31 October 2026

‘You were wondering I think, how long would it take for the garden snail you trod on once to travel a mile. You know, if it had lived, if you had been more aware of the surroundings and those single footed, moisture seeking beings, to travel a mile. Well, if it didn’t stop, just kept on going, it would make the distance in around 33 hours. You won’t watch it happen, of that, I am sure.

I wasn’t thinking about that, more about scale and vision, different vision from eyes moving independently on stalks, well that’s what I’m telling you now. The eyes are on tentacles, can they see in two directions, get two lots of info and process that? I do understand that the lenses developed over millennia are weak and cannot focus what is a monochrome view for them. Further to this the whole body is covered in light sensitive cells that can detect light and shade and movement. It can see a frog or you, but when the frog jumps the snail’s eye-brain process is slow, so for a while the frog has vanished, gone, doesn’t exist (for the snail). So, they might not see your shoe coming down on them, blissfully unaware.’

See it alongside millimetre: this lunate pebble, curated by Charmaine Wah, with work by Zarifah Ayman Zamri, Kenenza Michiko, Julian Udine & Charmaine Wah

Open Thursday - Saturday 12 - 6pm

here we lie in folds, collected stones, [...]
this lunate pebble, this splintered phalanx,
I can hardly hold their sincere explosions
- Ossuaries, Dionne Brand (2010)

𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙗𝙗𝙡𝙚

with Zarifah Ahmad Zamri (@zarifahstudios), Kenenza Michiko (@_kenenza), Julian Udine (@julian.udine.art), Charmaine Wah (@charcharwah)

Curated by Charmaine Wah

this lunate pebble gathers a collection of collections presented in millimetre (@millimetre_site) at Kingsgate Project Space (@kingsgateprojectspace). Each one memorialises an ancestral connection to land, sea and country.

Zarifah collects Malaysian stamps. Kenenza collects turmeric, echoing a forgotten surname. Julian collects patterns of coral skeletons from the Filipino coasts. Charmaine collects her grandfather, Mooi Kok Chee’s, agricultural research.

Encased in glass, our memories form a new ecosystem, vibrating with a single hum of another home, dreaming of somewhere warmer.

millimetre is an exhibition space contained within a single picture frame. Alongside 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙪𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙗𝙗𝙡𝙚, the main gallery space will exhibit Finlay Taylor’s (@fin_pupapress) solo exhibition titled “Run, Hide, Hibernate”.

Last chance! We’re open from 12 – 6pm today and tomorrow for the final days of ‘A feather from a jay’s wing’

With work by Eva Yiwei Yuan, Adrian Wiszniewski, Phoebe Unwin, Samuel O’Donnell, Marie-Claire Hamon, William Daniels, Michael Clarence, Maria Christoforidou

Showing until 13 June 2026

‘A feather from a jay’s wing’ is concerned with colour – specifically the inherent complication that comes when paint (pigmented colour) is used to conjure, or project, or surrogate for, other kinds of colour in the natural world, or in our psychological lives.

The structure of the feather of a jay’s wing causes only certain light wave frequencies to reflect in phase such that brilliant blues are perceived where the feather itself has no such local colour. Likewise, blue eyes have no blue pigmentation, rather a genetic mutation resulting in a lack of melanin within the iris forms a structure which bounces back the shorter light wave frequencies. Winifred Nicholson wrote about (and more importantly attempted to find a way of painting...) the enigmatic wonder of structural colour as seen through prisms, in mother-of-pearl shells and in water ripples. Her focus is fascinating. Those perceived colours are not actually present in those objects, but only made visible because of the way light is reflected or refracted through the structure of their surfaces…
