Finlay Taylor: Run, Hide, Hibernate

9 – 31 October 2026
Opening Thursday 8 October 6 – 9pm

‘You were wondering I think, how long would it take for the garden snail you trod on once to travel a mile. You know, if it had lived, if you had been more aware of the surroundings and those single footed, moisture seeking beings, to travel a mile. Well, if it didn’t stop, just kept on going, it would make the distance in around 33 hours. You won’t watch it happen, of that, I am sure…’

The following piece is the first in a series of collaborations between Painting Diary and Art & Market, a publication platform that seeks to highlight artistic voices from Southeast Asia. We hope this collaboration will help extend our coverage, offering an even broader global viewpoint on painting and its practitioners.

We open with an interview that was originally published as part of Art & Market's Midpoint series, which invites established Southeast Asian contemporary artists to take stock of their career thus far, reflect upon generational shifts, and consider the advantages and challenges of working in the present day. The interview is with Sherman Mern Tat Sam and it was originally published in late 2023.

When I first read this interview, I found myself taken by Sherman’s candidness and thoughtfulness, perhaps unsurprising given he is also a writer and critic and knows a thing or two about making words dance on the page. This interview recounts a broader history of Sherman’s practice and what it means to be a painter in a holistic sense. It recounts a process of continuously pulling from one’s life journeys and charts a continual conversation between people, places, and the inter-generational changing of the zeitgeist, spanning months and years and decades. We have chosen to publish an edited and updated version of the original interview, which is fitting given the artist’s reflections on a constantly changing artworld and his own evolving relationship to it. Sherman also updates us on what he’s been up to since 2023.

Thank you to Art & Market for allowing us the opportunity to re-publish this piece in modified form—in particular to Ian Tee, its Editor and the original author of this piece, who helped to bring this collaboration to fruition, and to Nadya Wang, the Founder and Managing Editor of Art & Market.

These phenomenal hand-built ceramic works have to be seen in reality. For an understanding of how they are made, there are some videos @SteveBuckStudio.

Steve is a greatly missed ceramic artist and influential tutor @UoW_CREAM.

A Look back at Light up Kilburn, we were lucky enough to host the artist Hannah Grace Whittaker @hannahgracewhittaker in our Project Space @kingsgateprojectspace for their Bioluminescent Garden workshop. Organised by Hive Curates @hivecurates together with members of the public they created UV sculptural flowers that lit up our local Kilburn Grange Park!

A truly heartfelt thank you for an incredible 2025 🥂

Thank you to all the art fairs, galleries, and organisations I worked with this year, for the opportunities and the trust.

Thank you to every collector who supported and continues to support my work, and welcomed it into their homes. Your support and belief mean more than I can express.

And a heartfelt thank you to all my students, and to everyone who joined a class or workshop this year and began or continued their creative journey with me.

I’m stepping into 2026 with a clear sense of direction, and I’m looking forward to sharing more exciting news soon.

Wishing you all a very happy new year, filled with creativity and curiosity.
