I told the room we were closing. Then Latoya took a moment.

She talked about Boyd Hill. About the rec center, where we played basketball from sunup to sundown and she was one of the few girls the boys would let on the court. And she called a name: Nancy Garner, my fifth grade teacher, who did not care where we lived, where we came from, or what we were dealing with.

Mrs. Garner was in the room to hear it.

Grown men are not supposed to cry at their own book launch. I tried.
