🎓✨ This week, I graduated with my Royal School of Needlework Certificate in Technical Hand Embroidery, and I am over the moon! 🌙

Here is my final project for the certificate: my goldwork embroidery. I was really worried about this technique, but in the end, it was the one I received the highest marks for, and I loved doing it.

The design was inspired by my favorite place in London, Kew Gardens, and the wonderful and intrepid explorer Marianne North. The flower Nepenthes northiana honours Marianne North, who first brought it to the attention of the scientific community in the 1880s. 🌸

My second project with the RSN was Canvaswork, and the inspiration was my beloved Venice with its most famous landmark the Palazzo Ducale.
I started with the stitch sampler, the one in the previous post, then did the watercolour drawing to understand the colours and picked the threads palette.
I really enjoyed stitching in Canvas, it was such a different challenge and approach. Mounting was very difficult, but to my surprise I did well and received good marks.
I loved the sunset colours that brought me straight back to late afternoons in Venice, seating by the fondamenta watching the colours of the lagoon change.

The choice for my Silk Shading project was the Schlumbergera, a native plant from Brazil. I wanted to depict something special from home, my Mum had a plant when I was growing up, and it was always a joy to see it flowering every year.

I was dreading to start this project, since Silk Shading was not very easy for me when I tried on the flowers of my Jacobean Crewelwork piece. But it was a lovely and enjoyable project to work on, from choosing the subject, drawing and painting the design, picking the colour palette, to embroidering every petal from this six centimetres flower.

Choosing the silk colour was quick and easy. I had some colours in mind and ordered a few samples, but as soon as I looked at the yellow silk against the flower, I've decided that it was the perfect sunshine background I needed for my happy tropical flower.

Stitching wasn't always a smooth process, I did a lot of practicing and sampling before I put the needle down on my actual piece. This helped me a lot to understand how to approach each petal, the flow and rhythm of my stiches and the best colour threads to perfectly match my design.

Mounting was getting easier, since this was my third project and I was more experienced, so I thought.
But in reality I've really struggled as it was such a small piece and quite fiddly.

This project had it challenges, but I loved working on it and learned so much. I am very proud of what I have achieved, and grateful for all the guidance from my tutors and the excellent feedback received from the assessors.

I am so excited to be teaching this Poppet-Inspired Brooch Workshop @museumofthehome as part of London Textile Month with @selvedgemagazine. We will explore the stories and meanings we can stitch into small handmade figures, taking inspiration from dolls in the Museum of the Home collection and poppet traditions from around the world.
Using simple materials, slow stitching and plenty of imagination, you will create your own unique poppet-inspired brooch to wear, gift or treasure.
All materials are provided, but you are very welcome to bring along any special fabrics, buttons, beads or little keepsakes to make your piece even more personal.

Inspired by a recently watched movie that stayed with me for a long time after it ended.
I was fascinated by Roberto Rossellini’s 1950 film Stromboli, starring Ingrid Bergman.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I had to embroider this. 🪡
